It's not games only. People have strong herd instinct. We tend to group together for safety. Around some place or around some ideas. When we feel that safety gets unstable and threatened by "a dev", rage ensues. |

I work in the service industry and have had customers yell, scream and physically threaten me, but do I go home and cry myself to sleep or quit my job? **** no, I'm bigger than that, and if I did I'd be letting them win. Also I'm talking about live person to person interaction not simply reading vitriolic rage posted by a faceless name on an internet forum. Ah, but the difference is, if someone IRL bitches around, you can just reach out and punch them in the face And any death threats made IRL can be dealt with easily IRL. Anonymity + death threats is kinda different though. Not if you intend to keep receiving a paycheck and not endure a lawsuit/criminal charges for assault and battery...It's called being the bigger man, letting it roll off your back and walk away. At best I have the option to refuse service. Death threats made online in this day and age are taken just as seriously as in real life.
Kinda this. It doesn't make sense, in all actuality no one will get mad enough to kill over a game. At least no one with the aptitude to actually kill people (Overweight basement dwellers do NOT have the aptitude to kill people) And if you want to continue to receive your paycheck, you're going to have to just deal with it.
They can handle it. Some of us actually deal with life threatening situations at work. Not just death threats. |

nice to see a thread about online abuse degenerate into name calling.....+1 for humanity :P
there have been numerous posts by DEVs hinting at internal procedures.
did you know that they have lists of threads that are recommended reading? I'm also fairly sure that i have heard of a newsletter that lists interesting threads and ideas, whether or not said ideas are taken seriously is no different to any other internet entertainment... some stuff is just fun or funny.
haven't you noticed that if something catches the eye of a DEV, that they will sometimes pipe in with random comments. Notice the reaction in a thread with a DEV post, they usually stretch on for quite a few more pages with players throwing ideas around.
DEV's have to learn fairly fast that everything they say and do is noted and memorised. This is why it is so bog standard for any game's DEVs to just hand out throwaway cryptic responses. It doesnt mean that they aren't listening, but that they know We are.
When you find a group of DEVs that are engaged in their project, it is no different to any player that is engaged in a game, the difference is that a DEV very often cannot say anything, for fear of being quoted if a change doesnt make it to Live. They then have to deal with the fallout from the player base, or those sections of it that can't or won't understand that there are processes going on behind the scenes to ensure that the product remains stable.
As always, the best way to get noticed is to not drown the message in painful, personal or vitriolic abuse or language. Don't write posts or threads as if a DEV will respond, instead get other players engaged in the discussion. It is still likely that a DEV will skim thru the thread, but more so than if they are looking for a reason to shut a thread down or lock it, because of abuse and other negative behavior.
gardens don't grow if every time a new plant pokes its head up you pour petrol on it set it alight then dance with glee around its smouldering corpse.... sure it sounds like fun.... of a sort... but only if all you want is flaming wreckage. |
