Surely profile dampening does affect long range, because some people don't show up with their health bars to my sniper scope (while a team mate near them does)? Or how are these people doing it? I've scoped out snipers from the same distance who I get the health bar on, yet some dudes on the ground at best my targeting dot goes red. |

I too am mystified by this system- if anyone has done extensive testing, or better yet if we could get some direct-from-development info on the back-end mechanics, that would be fantastic. |

I'd be really interested to know how to become one of those grey dots, instead of a grey dot with a skonking great huge pair of health bars above its head. Some of them are quite hard to notice and even if you do, it's usually just before they get behind cover. Dang useful! |

OK new guys time to let you in on a little secret. Put your dampener skill to lvl 3 and your chevron will disappear. I use three advanced dampeners and I am almost invisible to the enemy. You still can be seen but if your not looking or trained to know what to look for you can be out in the open and still not been seen. Also do not lay you ammo hives near you, they give you away. I am a proto lvl 3 sniper and I am rarely found, so just a heads up if you want to be a ninja sniper its all about the details. Hide near objects, place hives behind objects so there not visible, and find a good spot at least 300M from target. Good luck and good hunting. |

Oh, that reminds me of the time there was a dude on the bridge with alpha objective - he was behind the wall, but sadly the shadow system was showing his crouching, slowly moving shadow on the other side of the wall - so I had no health bars, but just the shadow. So it kind of dissapears when he gets to the gap (no more wall). I can't really see a thing and can't remember if my targeting dot went red, but I fired a speculative, blind shot into the gap (it all looked grey to me!) - and got a kill!
So you might well be dampened that much - just keep in mind your shadow might show in places it shouldn't! |

Seriously, passive scanning mechanics make no sense to me - but I don't think Devs know how it works either! |

Wait... So you get skill to level 3, AND, you use **3** dampeners?
Uhhh...
What suit?
PS: I'd add "300m from target.. and dark"

I'm pretty sure this is how it works without skills and dampeners anyway. Either that or there are a lot of heavies and logis running dampeners. Unless there is a blueberry close and in LOS of a red, you will not see a chevron. Same thing with vehicles only they are much more difficult to hide.
Dampeners only help if you are getting close to reds or to hide you from one that stumbles too close. At 300+ meters, no one has a chevron.
If you are sniping then you are better off with kin cats for mobility or armor plates to tank the counter sniper. |

Through a sniper scope they do. That's what makes counter-sniping more doable. You can actually "scan" a bit with the scope, without neccessarily having to hand-analyze Every Single Pixel of screen yourself.
Unless of course they've managed to dampen themselves to where it still doesnt show up. Which is why the OP and myself are interested in such a technique

I run the cal logi proto. 5 damage mods with 3 dampers and 1 scan extender. This is my baby and out of 300+ kills I have died 5 times. Out of those 5 a few was do to me getting greedy for kills.

If your skill is high enough I see all chevrons on individuals from over 200M. I also use a amplifier. If you want proof I will see about making a video, but I kinda don't want to give away trade secrets. |

Are you using a racial scout suit so you can get the profile dampening bonus from the skill too?
Edit: NVM saw your post about the cal logi |

Central US. Also if you or anyone are in game, send me a message and we can squad up. I will help all I can for any player that wants to learn some tricks. I run squad leader and I know maps very well so I know the ends and outs. I will not tolerate abusive language toward any player, lets keep clean, lets keep it professional, and about the game. |

I'm thinking that scouts get a hidden bonus for sniping.
I just tried someone else's beginning char, as a sniper. Didnt have nearly the same red-info pickup at distance that my scout suits do, in sniper scope.
either that, or militia sniper rifle's scope is actually inferior to passing back info.
For the *first time ever", I targetted someone who had no name, no health bars.. not even a chevron. Only the targetting dot turned red. and I DID get some info on his suit when dotted. Which I think just said "medium frame" or something lame. no proto or anything.
Dont remember the yardage, but I think it had to be around 200m. Definitely less than 300. I had militia precision module, and militia sniper rifle on. And this was in freebie caldari starting dropsuit.
I have NEVER (in two weeks) run across the "no info no chevron" situation in my scout suit sniping. Always get chrevron and name if they are within my main reticule. |

Some more thoughts. Clearly, redberry scanning is to some degree dependant on weapon.
Observations, based on targetting blue and red mcc, and a BRAND NEW TEST CHAR(so 0 SP in anything):
Limit on detailed scan range for militia sniper rifle, both scoped, and non-scoped, is 599 m, when fitted to a freebie default "sniper".
Interestingly, this is with, or without scope. Targetting enemy MCC. (Caldari. no precision or range enhancements are default either).
If you can get a target (blue or red) it in center of your screen, IE target area, , you will get basic shield/armor/range info out of it, appearing in in that blue text near the bottom of your screen Get it in SCOPE, and you will get its name in your tactical readout in that section.
Switching to submachinegun(milita), does not give the bluetext target info readout at same distance. Not even the most basic. (though of course you can still see the hp/shield info in the HUD display marker right on top of both of them) Nor at 399. or 299m. Further experimentation on blue targets, says it wont even register for 199m Effective detailed scan range for militia SMB, with ADS or without, is a pathetic 124m
Note also, that you have to actually get the precise target point of your weapon on the object, or it wont work.
I have some more experiments in mind to do. I'll edit this to update. But for now I'll post this before my computer eats it or something :) |
