CCP need to do something that will make websites like this re-review in a more positive light.

I say this, EVE was pooped on when it first arrived. People cried about that being too difficult or dismissing it as "spreadsheets in space".
10 years later it thrives on, no one is saying anything and the core community keeps on playing.
EVE is not commercially appealing and yet it does extremely well. This will happen with Dust. It's just not a commercially appealing title. I mean c'mon, he's complaining about bland colors of Dust 514? Since when the reputation of New Eden warrants vibrant coloring? The world is dark and grim.
He complains about Dust difficulty and then he goes to play Demon's Souls.
I'm tired of this assumption that EVE being successful despite a bad release inevitably means Dust will be successful too if we stick it out. I gets bandied about far too often without any supporting evidence.
I hope Dust is successful, but I'd rather stay realistically open-minded than unrealistically optimistic. If CCP plays their cards right Dust 514 could one day be far bigger than EVE. Here's hoping. |

If CCP plays their cards right Dust 514 could one day be far bigger than EVE. Here's hoping. Assumption in one instance, logical the next. You sound like that old man from Gran Torino. It's not being unrealistically optimistic, it's having strong faith in a product. Go find a stripper and a hug man, that drought is killing you. And why would Dust 514 be bigger than EVE when the plan is to combine them two to make one huge universe?
Combining them will not make them a single game, the same universe yes but ultimately they will be two different games, developed by two different studios, delivering two separate revenue streams.
Right now Dust is the Robin to EVE's Batman, given time that could be the other way around. The market for good FPS' is bigger than the market for point-and-click space ships. EVE has ~45k concurrent users at peak time on any given day, we're at ~5k. There's a lot of catching up to do but the potential for growth is massive if CCP button down and put in the work.
Lastly, if I'm being unrealistically pessimistic, which I think you're implying than it's purely based on experience up to this point. I've been around since beta and played enough games that squandered huge potential before. CCP dropped the ball early on but they're making the right moves (Flying Scottsman to CCP Shanghai has me very optimistic actually). It remains to be seen if the changes they're making are enough to ensure the future of Dust. |

So, DUST may fail, or it may succeed. What's important to note is that the definition of "success" is not the same for everyone. Most people find EVE incredibly intimidating and/or boring to even consider trying it out for a minute. Yet some think EVE is simply the only MMO worth playing - everything else is just plain silly compared to it. Same may be true for DUST.
CCP has proved that the (relatively) modest income they have from EVE is enough to keep the company healthy and running (and develop completely new titles from scratch). Having a difficult and underwhelming start is not exactly news to these guys. IMHO, some people are just too apocalyptic about DUST's inability to knock everyone off their feet at first glance.
I agree. Success really is in the eye of the beholder. To me it will be successful when it delivers what the trailers promised. If they can do that then commercial success will follow in short order (in my opinion).
