Hello dear friends, and welcome you to the Learning of how to Occupy the most used role in DUST, the Assault role.
While This Thread will only Briefly Outline the usage of the Assault role, you should experiment yourself, and make your own Ideas on how to best utilize the Role.
Shall we Begin?
One thing I would Like you to Remember, is that you're main role in this "Class" Is to take Objectives. Your not just there to brutally murder as many clones as Possible, your here to Attack, and Hold Objectives.
The Suit Makes the Man
Just like Formal Office wear, the Dropsuit you utilize to accomplish your Objective is Important.
Here's the overview of the Various Dropsuit Frames, and Specializations, and what general things to keep in mind when using them to assault.
Please Note, I'm leaving out the Suits I've not used, cause I don't want to make the Forum Posters mad that I've just gave New Guys bad advise.
Assault Suit- The Baseline Unit, designed to be able to hold its own in a variety of situations, able to Revive its fellow teammates with a Nano-Injector, or keep their Ammo Supplies topped off with a nanohive, this suit is a good choice for the Job your preforming. The Come with decent Speed, Decent HP when fully Fitted, and a Equipment slot to boot, this is a very well-rounded suit, advisable for those new to the Gameplay style.
Logistics Suit- Due to the Higher Allocations of slots, the Logistics suit could, theoretically, provide more HP then your average assault suit, at the cost of being slower, and the loss of a Sidearm. On the plus side, it has between 2 and 3 equipment slots depending on the tech level your using. This along with the capabilities of Logi's being able to not have to deal with the nuisance of fitting a Armor repper due to its Passive Blanket Bonus, leaves the Logi's in a good spot. a very good suit, if your willing to be among one of the less liked parts of the community.
Heavy Suit-Slow, and Lumbering to move, the Heavy suit is another good choice, provided your willing to change your playstyle to fit the Suit. With the possibility for Massive amounts of HP, the Heavy is a god choice for those with a little SP in vehicles, as attacking on foot is unadvised. While your still lumbering across the battlefield, the Assault and Logi Suits have already went and attacked the Objective. With Access to Short-ranged behemoth HMG and the Long-Distance Forge Gun, this is a Solid Choice for those who don't really care about being the First to fight. Another Downside to this suit, Besides its slow move speed, is the lack of an Equipment Slot, so your relying on the others on your team for ammo resupply.
I Thought they were all ID locked?
Now, my Fine furry friends, lets go over the Mercs best friend, his weapon.
I have skilled almost every weapon to standard, except the FG and the Sniper, along with weapons that are more for other Niches, so I will those ones out, like how I left out the Commando and the Scout
Assault Rifle- an All-Round good Weapon, they can strike out a good distance, and do a great deal of damage at that range. Standard weapon that Everyone should have one fit with.
Scrambler Rifle- A Longer Ranged weapon that can deal good damage to Shields, less to Armor. Good for Skirting the Objective, Picking off enemies while your allies go In and Hack it.
Shotgun- Well, the Basic consensus with this gun is, run at your enemy and blow his face off. Not Much to It. Good for Quicker Suits, and those in the Outposts with lots of CQC. OHKs a lot of STD Suits.
Heavy Machine Gun- Only Usable By Heavy Dropsuits, the HMG shines in the Outposts. It excels at dropping Small Dropsuits with ease, provided its in close spaces, i.e. 25 meters and lower. It could be advised to warm up the gun by shooting it for short periods of time as your closing in a Hostile objective. Has an extremely long reload, so remember to reload in a safe place.
Mass Driver- Good at suppressing Objectives, and getting the enemy to scatter. Lay back near where you would with a ScR and fire at a Objective, and watch the Roachs Scatter. Also could be used as a sort of Explosive Shotgun, with a Longer Range then the Shotgun, and the Blast radius, it preforms reliably in that area.
Well, what now?
Here are some other Tips I can give you as you go on to Capping Objectives.
- When fitting your Dropsuit, Try to fit as Many HP Buffers as Possible. Every second counts.
- Every Fit you make needs to have a Armor Repper, unless your a Minmatar Medium Frame.
- Squading Up helps you and your Squad mates get WP, which in turn gets you WP for an Orbital
- When your in a squad, try to communicate with your buddies, and organize meaningful Pushes for objectives.
- When Defending, try to utilize cover to the best of your ability. I hope I don't have to explain why.
- Always try to attack in groups. 2 is better then 1, and 4 is better then 2.
- Experiment with fittings. Once you have a solid Main Tank-Based fit, branch out and try things like Profile damping, Speed Tanking, Making a Glass Cannon Fit with All the highs filled with Damage Mods. Try New Specializations too, a Good Pub Player is a well Rounded One. While it may seem your wasting SP with getting all these guns to STD, it will help whenever you find something you're Regular Suit cant handle.
See you guys on the Battlefield.

Seems strange that the most used class in any FPS has zero response on a thread to help teach newberries tactics on how to get an edge in DUST.

What this guide lacks is the Skill Point Guide for new players to try and emulate. This guide would be much more appealing if it had that piece of information.
Another one would be Personal Opinions of Great Assault Players in terms of gearing. These opinions would probably be good guidelines for new players as well.
Anyways, awesome guide! |

Pardon for this, but I felt like adding something to this;
I think a good start, in terms of skills is; Core Upgrades, Engineering and Electronics to level 2 and Armour Upgrades and Shield Upgrades to 3. The former three will increase your CPU and PG for fittings, and the latter two will increase your HP levels by 15% each (5% per level).
After that, depending on suit, an Armour Repair Module would be a wise investment. I'd also recommend a Damage Modifier or a Shield Recharger. New players can get all three as Militia gear from the Marketplace, so there's no need to spend SP on them just yet.
Speaking of Militia gear; grab some equipment. Nanohives, Nano Injectors and Repair Tools are all commonly needed items for supporting a team. You can only carry one at a time as an Assault, so pick wisely. Nanohives resupply ammo in limited quantities, Nano Injectors revive downed allies if they weren't killed by an explosive or excessive damage, while the Repair Tool lets you heal an ally. All three will earn you WP (War Points) from use. WP = more SP at the end of battle. |

What is this whereof you speak?
You make it sound like they self-repair. However, I dont see any mention of that on http://wiki.dust514.info/index.php?title=Medium_Dropsuits#Logistics

Verily, thine logistics dropsuit repairith one hitpoint of armor per level of logistics skill, unto a maximum of five hitpoints per seconds without any modules.
You can read it on the racial logistics skillbook info tab. http://wiki.dust514.info/index.php?title=Skills#Minmatar_Logistics_Dropsuits |

[edit: yes, "inaccurage". I rage against inaccurace. ]
MINMATAR logistics suits self- heal. But not "logistics suits" in general.
(and even then.. why doesnt the wiki show it? they show at least 1 point for the minmatar assault suits. wierd...) |

A couple more tips for game play: 1. Be careful not to bunch together too closely. A single cooked grenade could wipe most of your squad out if properly placed. It also lets your opponents spray and have most bullets hit someone. Besides, flanking manuvors can allow you to get free aimed shots or take out people hiding to let their shield and armor replenish. be careful: flanking can leave you too far from your group, so only do it when you have cover and a way back to the group or escape route. 2. Keep your blood lust in check. A number of times, I have chased an opponent away form my group because I'm blinded with blood lust, not realizing that my HP are similarly low. If I'm lucky, I get enough shots off while he runs away. But, he can also go around a corner and wait aiming for me, or lead me into his squad. The former you can potentially survive; the latter is guaranteed death. It's been said a billion times on the forums, but still can't be said enough: stick with your group (unless your playing a skilled hit and run game). |
