I'm about to start unlocking proto suits and gear in the next couple weeks, and while I have invested into some skills to help with fitting all this new stuff, it's going to be a while before I can fit everything comfortably. So I need to make some sacrifices, and one of the sacrifices I'm thinking of making is sticking with an advanced or even basic sidearm weapon.
Here are my reasons for doing so: I use an SMG as a sidearm. The higher tier SMGs offer higher damage, accuracy, and range. Well, since I'm using my SMG as a secondary weapon, I mainly only use it in CQC situations, where the improved range and accuracy wouldn't benefit me all that much. As for the damage, it's only a point or two higher per tier, and as fast as the SMG fires, I can't see me noticing that extra damage.
My hold ups are that the way I play, if an enemy is close enough, I use an AR to drain his shields and switch to the SMG to hit his armor. If the enemy isn't that close, I just use the AR since it has better range than the SMG. I don't like the idea of skimping out on what is basically half my CQC strategy. Also, having a proto primary and a standard secondary is going to feel weird until I get used to the idea.
So what do you all think? Should I try and make a proto sidearm fit, or could the CPU and PG be better used elsewhere? |

Proficiency skills will make the tiers matter a little less. You could still wreck with a lower tier weapon that has a high proficiency skill level if you can't fit a higher tier weapon on that suit. |

I can't start skilling into the proficiency skills until I unlock proto weapons, but I am planning on maxing those out regardless of what tier weapons I'm using. |

You're going to have a problem fitting a proto main weapon beside a proto SMG on most suits. See if you can get a proto main weapon and then the advanced assault SMG ... wrecks with high proficiency. |

To be honest, Proto sidearms no, Imo.
If you get your proficiency up along with any other support skills to make your sidearm better that's all I need to finish off enemies.
Now if you plan on using your sidearm a lot that's a different question but anything other than that to me is just a waste of ISK/CPU/PG |

If you have the core upgrades high enough to handle the CPU/PG, I'd say yeah.
I just got into advanced SMGs for my side arm, and I find myself using it a lot more than I was before. Even if I have a ton of AR ammo left and I'm close enough.
I want to make out with my side arm. Take it down to Lou Macconi's up the block, wine and dine it a bit. Tell it that it has had way too much wine, so it should come back to my place to sober up. But then? Oh, I'm opening up this fancy pinot I got on sale, throwing on vinyl (sidearms dig vinyl over mp3), show it around the place. Maybe even to the bed room? Yeah, probably.
Higher tier sidearms are great. |

Also, as you plan your suit down the line to start using Swarms, its pretty important to have a sidearm that you can actually defend yourself with. If that's the case, its definitely worth it. I'm sure you've used the start swarm suit, and I'm sure you felt just as helpless as we all do when using it. |

Yes. Yes I did.
Just to clarify to everyone, I'm not saying that Proto SMGs aren't worth using (I definitely would use one if I were using a swarm fit). I'm just asking if it's worth using the PG and CPU on a secondary weapon instead of somewhere else (like to stack complex shield extenders for example). Down the road, once I have maxed out every skill that has anything to do with fitting, I'm planning on running both a proto primary and secondary weapons, but for now I need to make cuts.
Also, I rather enjoyed your description of your evening with the SMG, Nemo. |

Smoke em' if you got em'.
My protp suit has 4 shield extenders on, a complex damage modifier, a duvolle, and I still have room for an advanced SMG. Gotta get them core upgrades up, and use some CPU/PG buffs if you need to. It all depends on what kind of fit you're going for. That one is basically for a straight assault fit. If you were to go for a more middle of the road/for a Logi, or even have better equipment? It all depends on what you're going for. |

I would only skill sidearms for the sake of buffing my Toxin. Beyond that, I'd rather get proficiency 5 on a main weapon than all the skills that sp could get me on a sidearm.
I found out recently that this is called minmaxing. |
