Why do you think people feel the need to AFK? Why are they AFK'ing instead of playing? Why bother AFK'ing if the game is so boring that you do nothing but AFK?
I'll let you answer these before I continue my post. I truly want to see why you think the AFK'ers AFK.
I think alot of AFKers mistakenly believe that more sp will change their performance on the field. Maybe... but not very much. Sure, a few million sp would change things, but one or two upgrades? Not to a noticeable degree. |

Sniping properly is a lot of work. If you're just redlining, you're doing it wrong. And if you never, EVER die from sniping, you must be buried so deep in the hills behind your redline, that you won't be able to contribute. |

More sp = more skills = more toys. That's why people afk farm.
I afk farm and i play the game... They don't have to be mutually exclusive. |

TheAmazing FlyingPig wrote:For example (and these numbers really mean nothing, they are meant to be used as an example), let's say the soft cap is at 500 WP's, where you earn 5 SP per WP gained. 2500 SP when you cap out. I'd like to see steadily diminishing returns on it, so that the good players are still rewarded, but the fresh Academy recruit isn't left completely in the dark. Let's say 501 - 1250 earns you 3 SP per WP, and 1251+ gives you 1 SP per WP. I earned 750, so I get (500 * 5) + (250 * 3) = 3250 SP.
Something like that, so the fresh players are still rewarded well for at least trying, while the vet is still gaining more than him for actually doing better.
Fresh players get awarded the benefit of skilling more quickly, as initial skills cost for less SP. Fix the SP cost, or fix the amount of SP people earn, but not both. Keep It Simple, Stupid.
No degressive SP gain, progressive skill cost, rebates and subsidies. For that, we already have the bloody government.

TheAmazing FlyingPig wrote:I am an AFK'er. I would like to see AFK'ing stop, but not through means that force people to play, but reward the choice to play. Make people not want to find the exploit in the system that allows easy farming of SP, but instead want to play the game as it was intended to be played.
Compare: Knife that man over there in the face and I'll give you a piece of chocolate. To this: Knife that man over there in the face or I'll knife you in the face.
Now, the first one rewards you for murdering the man with chocolate. The latter has a consequence for not murdering him. Which one would you be happier to comply with?
AFKers just want to gain easy SP, without having to 'work' for it. They can't be bothered to play properly, they abandon their team, and don't care that they screw up other's people fun and ISK in the process. If you're that selfish, no SP cap rollover or magical new content is going to change that.
Waiting for new content is a crap excuse, and you know it. Same for a cap rollover: the SP still has to be earned, so they'll still keep on AFKing. |

TheAmazing FlyingPig wrote:
The "play or quit" mentality is detrimental to the game in its already weakened state. Why drive off more players? Why not use this as an opportunity to add more to the game?
Of course all of the AFK'ers could just up and quit, but the game would be no better than it is today. I see this as a chance to do some good for the game while also fixing the AFK farming issue.
AFK'ers drive people away. How can you have a decent (and fun) match if half your team is gone? AFK'ers need to realize they're part of Dusk's problems.
If all AFK'ers would quit, the game would be better than today. More even teams balance the playing field and make for a more exciting (and less frustrating) game. So, by all means, please quit and good riddance. You have my thanks! |

I know others who do it for ISK they don't need. I don't think the current model of play will last for long. I think grinders should have high risk ways of getting rich or getting huge sp.
If you haven't tried it, make an alt. See how the new players feel. It isn't fun. |

Friendly fire enabled after 35 seconds in the MCC and two minutes in the red zone would fix some or most afkers.
Yes, meaningful content is the best solution and the only one that will work. We want to feel like we are changing something besides our kdr. I don't mind the bugs in the new content, it is part of the fun of having new stuff because like with ALL new things there will always be problems. My point is, drop the content and let us break it. If CCP builds it we will fight for it and we will work out the bugs. New things are badly needed. Most of us don't care about the looks if the content is there and the rage about balance and bugs will subside as long as we make progress.
The Pig is correct, afk does prove that people want the game and believe it or not rage posts and troll posts prove the same thing. Most people wouldn't waste their time on the forums if they didn't care about the game.
Finally, there will always be afkers just like there will always be afk cloakers. It is a valid play style for meta gaming and tear harvesting. As long as there is active SP there will be boosting and exploits that cheat the system so trying to stop afking is a battle that cannot be won. |

I'm not arguing against more content, but the point of New Eden is that we are the content.
New content = significant devtime.
Give us:
- Working core mechanics.
- Non destructive in-match sp system.
- Comms that reflect the command structure.
- Basic corp roles.
- A squadless, gear limited skirmish mode. New players and recruiters would love this.
- Intra-DUST ISK and item trading(Batting .500 on that one already, CCP)
- Intra-DUST player market.
...and we would do a damn fine job of generating our own content, giving the devs breathing room to get their feet under them again.
Imagine what our political history would be like today if this had been in place for the past 6 months. It would be epic, and rivaled by only one other game on the planet: EVE online. |

*Grabs thread by the face and throws it to the front page* Oh nonono, I'm not done with you yet.
Good conversation we're having on the topic. Glad to see people share this opinion instead of the "play or leave" mentality that would only make the game worse. |
