Despite what role you play, I highly recommend that everyone spec a little into ARs: at least to the level of a GEK-38. As trends have shown, weapon balancing has always been on the "nerf" side. However, the AR has been relatively untouched throughout the course of this game's history.
Having a decent weapon to fall back on when your specialized weapon takes a turn for the worse is always something to keep in mind. The AR, by no means is over powered, but its simplistic yet effective qualities makes it an all-around weapon for any level of player to pick up. It is reliable as it is efficient and versatile, and what little SP required of you will be well worth the investment.

AR514, why not? I'm pretty sure I only have skill for the STD tier of Gallente ARs.
Whatever it is right now, I haven't used them in ages. I refuse to put further SP into them out of principle. |

Like hell I'm going to stoop to that level.
I've managed to spread my SP out so I can use whatever I damn-well please. Well, except mass drivers, plasma cannons, and shotguns. Going to wait for the MD craze to die down before putting SP back into them, while plasma cannons and shotguns just take too much SP for a mediocre effect. |

AR's have been nerfed SEVERAL times. Camera sights, overall DPS, range, ect. Anyone remember when you could kill people with a Creodron?

ARs have seen the nerf bat just look at the Breach and Tactical. The breach is a mere shell of its former glory and the tactical was actually balanced pretty well, great at long range and mediocre up close. |

The Tac AR? Balanced? The damage per shot was high, semi-auto but with maximum RoF above vanilla ARs, a good magazine, high effective range, quite accurate hipfire. Performed wonderfully at ranges in excess of most other weapons, good at mid-range, was actually a solid pseudo-shotgun if you CQC'd with it. There was absolutely no reason not to use it, outclassed just about everything.
Add in turbo mods to the mix? You've got an AR with triple the damage and a higher RoF than the vanilla. Longer ranged, too. Magazine was around half of standard but total damage per magazine came out higher.
