With there being more weapons coming in to the game, and to encourage diversity I propose the following changes.
Removal of weapon specific operation, reload, etc skills.
Do what EVE already does!!
Projectile Weapons Laser Weapons Hybrid Weapons Ordinance Weapons
This will allow weapon diversity, while not requiring players to SP sink into a single weapon, which is open to being nerfed into the ground and causing undue whine.
Projectile Weapons Incoming "minmatar" weapons Current HMG Current SMG
Laser Weapons Laser Rifle Scrambler Rifles Scrambler Pistols Incoming "amarr" weapons
Hybrid Weapons ARs Forge Gun Plasma Cannon Incoming "caldari/gallente" weapons
Ordinance Weapons Swarm Launcher Mass Driver Flaylock Anything that shoots an explody round. Man portable missile, grenade, whatever.
I understand that CCP wants to encourage specializations, but having to throw so many points into a weapon that you might not like, or might get nerfed into oblivion does not sit well with me. Being allowed to spec into a "class" of weapons would give more options and more flavor to the game. The minimum "required SP" to be competative is already really high after race specific suit, race specific suit spec, dropsuit upgrades, weapon skills, grenade skills, weapon upgrades. Collapsing some of that SP would be greatly helpful and appreciated.
Of course all of this is a moot point if we don't actually get some new content. The promised new weapons and dropsuits and vehiles not even being mentioned is starting to have me seriously worry about and doubt the future of this game. |

Mass driver and Flaylock are projectile, not ordinance. Projectiles can explode; particularly minmatar ones. |

My bad, never saw that thread. I was more going along the lines of breaking the weaponry into 4 main lines like EVE does, but it is pretty similar to the other ideas.
Either way I agree that the weaponry tree is silly large and bloated. I havn't crunched numbers, but 300mil to max it seems like hyperbole. Regardless of that fact, if DUST were to be more like EVE, the Gunnery tree tops out at 45ish mil, which includes every weapon skill, weapon enhancement skill, capital weapons, and the dread skill. Missiles tops out at 24ish mil, which is every variant of missile piecemeal, as well as the proficiencies and support skills as well as bomb deployment, defender missiles and FOF missiles. EVE doesn't require pilots to train for each and every variant of every turret or launcher the pilot wishes to equip. And at that, it is broken down to Small/Medium/Large for the turrets.
Even having each "line" be a rank 5 skill and take 1.28mil to max would be more streamlined, and open more options as new weaponry is released.
Either that, or reduce weapon skills to rank 1, proficiency to rank 2 or 3, and the ammo/reload to rank 1 or 2 would shave several million SP required off the "cost" of crosstraining.
And as an aside, it shouldn't be too difficult to release the missing weapons. How many artists does CCP have on staff? How many engineers are required to enter the new weapon stats into a DB? I don't care at this point if they are recoloured existing weapons with the same sounds and animations. Complete the damn game and iron out the kinks already. The only things that have been added since closed beta are the plasma cannon, scrambler rifle, and flaylock. |
