This is an extension of the feedback that FoxFour was looking for here https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=100548 but goes into a bit more detail on a feature that might be a good idea to implement since they are redoing it. As I often squad lead, this is feedback that would definitely improve my experience with calling in strikes and maybe yours?
Current Process to Call in an Orbital Strike
- Notice is available once you earned in (its flashes and goes away pretty fast, team is pretty good at making sure I remember but even then I can forget if in a fire fight)
- Right D-Pad
- Pick Orbital
- Pick Type
- Map takes a while to load.
- Try to get your guys to spot the enemy for a good OB!
- Launch and hope that your skills were good at determining where the enemy was and there is no overhang to protect them.
The Bad Things About this Process
- So many button clicks and waiting for different menus to load!
- Did I mention time it takes to move between all theses screens?
- You see an enemy coming at and you about to kill you? better be quick with O because it takes multiple clicks to back out
- No real feedback on the difference of strikes, what they can do, etc.
Ideas for Improving This Process
- Eliminate the menu call in system
- Implement calling in OB from the map (Down D-pad)
- Implement easy toggle between Orbital Types in map for modes that have it (FW / PC Only)
- Implement real time feedback on area of effect for each Orbital type with colors used to highlight the range of each.
- Expanding on last point for future implementation: highlight amt of damage and the range of said damages (aka dark red in middle to high most damage with it filtering out to yellows further out)
- Implement a quick strike option for the SL command wheel that acts like Attack Order but is instead a Quick Strike where the SL does not have to view the overhead map but runs the risk of killing themselves since they have to have line of sight to set it.
Benefits
- Less clicking
- More user friendly with less switching between screens
- Gives commanders more information on how the strike will effect the battle

My idea would have been to put the OB button on the Squad Leader dial, so in addition to setting a FRAGO, you get to call down an Orbital the same way |

I would love a way to just get to a high position, aim at the ground where you want the strike to be, and then press the squad command buttons (R2, R3) to get to the reticule, select Orbital, press fire to call in.
This would make it feel more like the trailers too.
Also, an incentive to actually make use of a good sniper. |

To add one thing.
When you are notified of orbital availability, it should say press "_______" to use. Sadly I still find people who don't know how to use Orbitals, and don't pay attention to the top right/kill feed area. |

Definitely would be good to make it that you don't have to go into map mode for a quick OB.

Yes, something, even an icon that stays on the screen / map would be nice. blinking gets people attention, just not blink tags please

I love the idea of doing it like a Rally order where you just mark the ground by line of sight.
I really do hate all the windows and button clicks needed to get to it. You need to run for safety to use the orbital because of how long it takes, and then you have no time if a guy does see you and kill you while placing. |
