While the CQC scouts of old are no longer viable, that isn't what this thread is about. I recently decided to try being a true scout-
- I avoid direct combat, but use a sniper rifle and nova knife so I can kill before the enemy can react.
- I throw down uplinks in prime areas for my team- either far enough away that the enemy won't see them, or just in a place they can't reach them. Personally loving the mobility of scouts for this- I've reached ledges only reachable by scouts, in order to plant uplinks.
- I use a cardiac regulator to roam the map, constantly re-positioning to snipe or place an uplink.
- I also use a codebreaker (damn, that's a lot of SP, but a nice payoff) for various purposes- mainly hacking supply depots because I don't have nanohives.
While roaming around the map and getting into sniper battles (not duels- most frontliners have no idea there's a war raging in the hills) can be pretty fun, I've run into some issues.
Rendering Very buggy, and I don't think distance is all of it. Sometimes, a player will take a step in any direction and vanish. The render distance varies also- sometimes players become invisible but I can still deal full damage, while other times I can see them but they're out of range. Using a standard tactical sniper if that means anything. Also, it's not just players which have rendering issues. I can usually see the glow from uplinks and nanohives, but not the equipment themselves; makes it difficult to snipe a pesky uplink.
Knives To put it simply, all medium frames can backpedal to avoid my knives. This is ignoring the terrible framerate/lag in CQC that causes myself and my opponent to teleport around.
Lag in general It seems that during laggy games, I can't fit through tight spaces that I normally can. It also interferes with some close jumps I make, causing me to fall short. Finally, hacking is extremely difficult sometimes. The game likes to stop my hacks midway through, or make me sit there and hold down O for 5 seconds before the hacking actually starts.
One thing I like, however, is that I can find players by watching for a faint glint of their weapon, or listening for sniper shots- this was good, although the sounds aren't consistent.
Just a side note to other snipers- I can see the glow from your nanohive from a VERY long ways away. Might want to put it on the other side of the hill or something. |

I agree. I'm a minmitar scout and with nova knifes and remote explosives. The only way to kill with a knife is if they aren't looking |

Forgot to add something- A coordinate system would be nice; just to call out locations more accurately to the other team. I know you can call stuff like "on top of the tower near B", but when there are no particular landmarks except maybe a slightly larger rock than usual, it doesn't help.
The coordinates can just be as simple as in the "map feedback" forums- C6 and things like that. In first person, it could show the coordinates of where you're standing and the coordinates of where your crosshairs are pointing, being displayed underneath the mini-map.
In the full map, it would just show the coordinates of wherever the map cursor is on. |

Have they added WP for active scanning yet, or is that coming in next patch?
If they add it I might honestly go full scout and do nothing but scan and stab unaware mercs on the fringes of battle. I think I've got enough SP to even get into max-tier scanners. |

I still think scouts should get an extra equipment slot to let them act as sort of a medic, or any other use a stealthy unit can find for an extra equipment slot.
I'd also like to see a new light frame spec too. Maybe a skirmisher that trades it's equipment slot and/or sidearm for a bunch more health? |

I would love another scout specialization that traded a sidearm and a equipment slot for more HP. |

Still SoonGäó I've said it a thousand times, but.. Fun fact: I wrote the original scanning WP thread, or at least the first one the devs acknowledged in their thread about what they're interested in.
if not in 1.4 (they really want it to be in 1.4 but not sure if they can) then 1.5. That being said "SoonGäó" wouldn't be the right word... or at least it would be inaccurate with the "Gäó" at the end.

Yeah backpeddlers are a pain. The inability to charge and sprint combined with slow non-sprint speeds makes it hard to get those guys. I used to run with only my Proto Knives and an Active Scanner but since dumped them for the Advanced ones so I can pack an SMG and some RE's for more versatility. If you miss a stab usually it is best to just keep running away instead of giving chase with your knives. Sometimes rounding a corner and charging up a stab to pounce like a tiger is the best bet. Or plant an RE and blow them up when they give chase. |

I want my LAV horn to be the INCEPTION HORN!
FYI- CQC with knives is hard, but it's more than viable. A couple of tips:
- Do not panic. You want to stay in control of your bearings (which is hard given the narrow FOV we have to contend with).
-You want to make your prey panic. You want to strafe and get them firing off target. You will take a few hits to be sure. But you want them to start spraying and wasting their ammo. know your enemies armaments. how much ammo they have. how many hits you can take from that weapon. etc.
- If you can make them deplete their stamina and ammo before you really start going in at them.
- You can only slash 4 times and then you'll get a false swing. Make sure to pace yourself, and do no more than 3 slashes and then take a second. Go for 4 if it's close, but then realize you can't slash for a second. That sounds like something you wouldn't worry about, but once you are in a hard core fight, that last choke swing can get you killed.
- try to corral your prey into a corner or against a wall/object. They have no idea what is around them as they back pedal, and they will typically backpedal directly away from you. swing towards their flank to get them to backpedal into something solid. you can surprisingly begin to "steer" your prey like this. and once they are hung up on a wall.. well :D go to town
- leaping can be your friend. The trick is to leap at a severe angle at a sprint so you don't go high up, but far forward. While you are doing this, you can charge your knives. You can always charge your knives while in the air, FYI. If you time it right, you can land near them with a charged hit ready to fly. OHK nearly every time. Only the heaviest of heavies can survive it with nary a g string of armor left. EDIT: Try to land where you think they will be when you release the charged hit. it's almost like leading a sniper shot.
- if you are being hunted... try to run and lure them into a funnel point where you are waiting with your knives charging. if they aren't smart enough, they will walk right into a hit. watch out for nades tho!
- try to slash people from their side.. strafe past them and slash where they will be as you pass. it's sneaky and people don't even know it is coming.
You'll die a lot no matter what, but it's fun fun satisfying kills :) practice, and make sure to always think on your feet!

EDIT: This is the best way to kill someone who is unaware of you and sprinting away. Let them keep running until they have no stamina left. usually they will slow to a walk and then try to run with the little stamina that regenerates.. so it can get rocky timing this.. but you want to out run them, keep sprinting until you are right on them and then out walk them and have the knives charging so you release as you pass. It should kill them outright, You'll die a lot no matter what, but it's fun fun satisfying kills :) practice, and make sure to always think on your feet! happy hunting! I do all of that. Still doesn't counter backpedaling in the open. |

The only counter to backpedaling is running a largish circle around them until they are about to run out of ammo.. then rush in for the attack. it's definitely not easy.
And it is very lame people can walk as fast backwards as a scout can move forward. there's many movement issues. Scouts should be far faster. or others far slower. it is silly that a logi can run faster than a minja scout. everything but a heavy can, and even they can half ass keep up with me somehow some times. hehe. i imagine it is like getting chased by chris farley. |

Try the TY-5 Breach Scrambler pistol, headshots kill everyone except heavies and some PRO-users. I've been using it on my Scout also with a sniper rifle and uplinks and it works fantabulously.
Also, Scouts should have 2 equipment slots. |

First of all, yes to the TY. Secondly, why doesn't anyone remember Type II Scouts! |

I remember the type 2 scout in chromosome but never used it because I wanted a scout that traded a side arm and equipment for more HP and melee damage without sacrificing speed. (would be fine if the stamina and stamina regeneration and shield recharge speed was less so even more melee damage and HP can be added for balance lol). |
