Every soldier should be able to carry a knife for those moments they need to silently kill from behind or they pull the trigger and hear, "click, click, click." Keep the Nova Knives the specialist weapon that goes in sidearm slot or higher. The Combat Knife would be an uncharged weapon but still require a small amount of fitting so that it's optional with tight fits. You can even make it a separate skill point sink. We know you love those.
The idea is that it provides more damage than melee but would require selecting the weapon ahead of time instead of panic attack with the butt of your rifle. |

Or just change the melee option to the combat knife again. |

I thought about that but then you lose that moment when you see someone running at you with a knife and you pull an Indiana Jones with your Scrambler Pistol. Seriously, though, the idea is to reward those willing to sacrifice some fitting room and to plan their melee attack with something stronger than a regular melee.
That and knives are just cool if impractical for most situations. |
