There is nothing wrong with AV. I have run proto AV since the murder taxi days..... good times. I still destroy tanks with my SL sure you have to get in close now but that makes AV combat more fun. The mercs who complain are the tower campers of old.

Get someone else in your squad on comms to rig your LAV with REs drive upto the tank and get them to detonate. You dont die you dont lose your LAV the tank still pops. Then sit back and read the fan mail.

Move smart on foot is the best way I have found avoid roads and so on. Or use a DS for fast insertion and extraction from letters if you know any pilots. AV now is a team effort to take down tanks so don't try to solo them anymore.
