It also happens when shooting tanks that have been called in by the enemy, as in my case. The enemy had called in their own tank, not stolen it, when I tried to take it down. Still, it's good to know that's one reason for what happens.

If you try to spawn in and get stuck, as in you see the countdown hit zero but you don't spawn in and can't cancel, try pressing up on your d-pad to bring up the leaderboard for the battle. This forces the spawn through. I have no idea why.
