I agree, i hate the Sentinel because is a defensive role, and i prefer a more "aggressive" approach...If you want to be aggressive with a Heavy try the Commando suit , that is their intended role... But you may need to "aim" and use the crapy GEK-...

Honestly .. i'm no sure if it is any damage calculations. Shield damage is actually very close to armor damage... so is just Shield and Armor HP added to each other ; Shield 300 + Armor 300 = 600hp health.
