I'm a bit more interested in the non-standard variants, and also what the Caldari Rail Rifle will do that makes it stand apart from the crowd.
The thing I love about New Eden weapons (or at least what weapons I've read about in lore) is that they really do give off the vibe of being very futuristic, and unorthodox.
So far the "unique" weapons are in my mind: 1) The Scrambler Rifle (my personal favorite), just the regular version. With the ability to fire multiple shots, or have a charged shot, it feels different then alot of guns I would use in other games (especially the modern day shooters) and it really stands out in my mind is being really rather unique.
2) The Laser Rifle (even if it's not in the best state right now), normally if you see the laser rifle in other games it's some sort of BFG / end game weapon that you wouldn't use / see in a regular pvp match. I like the concept of the weapon, and hope it makes a speedy recovery.
3) The Flaylock: While the mass driver is basically a grenade launcher-esque weapon (which is why I don't include it) the Flaylock feels cool, because of it's pistol format. That alone makes it sound like a fearsome weapon, and makes it rather unique as far as most FPS games I play go. (As for lore, the Bolt Pistol from WH 40k sounds very similar but better.)
4) Forge gun: Maybe this is just my forgetfulness, but I've never really seen an AV weapon that behaves quite like the Forge gun does. In that sense I feel it's a unique and powerful weapon. Unless it's like another weapon from other FPS games that I just can't think of.
--That's not to say I don't like the other weapon types, it's just... I've seen them before. I've played lots of other games with assault rifles, and HMGs, and snipers, and shotguns, I've played with tracking missiles, and knives. I've relied upon pistols and SMGs too. The weapons look cool / sound cool in EVE, and I love the art design of them, but it still doesn't change the fact that I've seen those types of weapons before.
What I'm truly looking forward to in DUST is not weapons I've seen in just about every other shooter, but the strange, and the unique, the weapons that make sense but at the same time feel like they are from a different time, and a different underlying philosophy of the weapons of today which are largely made with the mortal soldier in mind. In a sense I want weapons much akin to the music in EVE (yes EVE has sound), it's interesting and cool, while still sounding quite futuristic, and unlike anything I'd normally listen to. |
