i've seen a lot of threads about pubstomping lately and instead of responding to each one i'm makeing a thread explaining my thoughts on the matter.
i've read a number of really good ideas on the matter... and some easily exploitable ones.
the first is to put you in matches determined by the amout of SP you have. the problem with this method is old players could just start up new toons and continue to pubstomp. also some older players may have a lot of sp but still not be very good at fighting.
the next idea was creating a special beginner playlist for scrubs. this has all the same problems as the first an not as many benefits.
here is my proposition: players are ranked on a 5 match WP average and placed into matches with other players who scored roughly the same amount of WP. so old high SP players who don't play much/aren't good still play with people on their level. scrubs play with others on their level and protobears play on their level. (in squads it would average the average's of the players)
now lets take it one step further lets track the amount of wp earned with different platforms/weapons and use that info to balance the number of tankers, scouts, assaults, heavies and logis in each match. |

Tracking what weapon used would be nice. WP alone isn't enough. I'm no killing machine and seem to get between .5-1.5 kdr, but can get tons of wp's from hacks, droplinks, blowing up large turret, nanohives, proxy mines. Since I'm almost always a scout SL/smg, it would be nice if that followed me and better placed me into matches. |

Just take gear into account. Kill 50 militia suits with 500k sp while in a full proto loadout? Get 50 WP. Kill 1 full proto loadout in a militia suit? Get 150 WP. |

Well not everyone likes pubstomping , why waste a 700k fit when you only get 250k per battle? Oh I forgot some scrubs needs to be in proto gear to be halfway-decent. |

It's not a horrible idea. I think it is going to need to be a more complex system that covers multiple angles.
I think matching players by SP appeals to many because it levels the "role play" aspect of the game. It increases the likelihood (but does not guarantee) that a victory is won by player skill and not character skill.
I agree that some form of WP averaging would probably give a decent idea of player skill. Someone a while back came up with an idea of calculating a WP per death ratio, which sounds interesting and might work better than averaging WPs for the last few matches.
Players also can have an economic advantage over each other. Two players might have the skills to uses all proto gear but one might be broke and running all standard fits and the other might have ISK to waste 10 proto suits and a couple decent tanks just for laughs. This will get even more complicated with the player market and EVE interactions.
Another issue to work around is squads. They complicate things for several reasons. For one, if the members of a squad all have different skill levels (however you decide to calculate them) you can't really split them up. Another factor is the incalculable advantage a squad communicating with each other has over players who don't. Perhaps if the matchmaking did a better job of evenly distributing squads and individuals on opposing teams. Maybe also tracking corporations so you don't get to squads of the same corp on one side also.
It is going to be near impossible for CCP to make a system that balances all the factors, but the system can still be improved.

Good input. We know they are looking into the problem as it currently exists.
This Might be enabled by Filters on the Battle Finder.
[Flame Retardant On] Deciding if one wants to play again/with KB/M players or Controller only was mentioned recently.
I think it is a good idea [Flame Bait Off] but I think the More Important Idea is to have various Filters to enable/disable. Which is how I read the Devs comments.
Mine would include:
Clones at 90% both sides.
Ambush Time remaining > 10 minutes.
Yours might look like these:
WP > 100K.
And sometimes WP < 100K.
And to expand it a little bit:
Proto Gear Off.
To satisfy the condition that no match is available something would either have to be set (Find Best or Find Any) if a particular set of Filters block finding any matches.
Thanks for the Post. The Devs need input like this much more than the QQ Nerf posts. |
