I don't know why, but my aim is just terrible. I've tried turning Aim assist on/off, but I can't tell the difference. Even if I get the jump on a red, I'll usually screw up and get killed Any tips? |

Try getting it so that you can control it nicely while using a sniper. I had it at 50 but had to lower it because it was way too sensitive for the small aim adjustments. Maybe it helps with the AR? Maybe try a shotgun? |

spend a week using one of these (supporting your team, no front line c*ap) and your aim will magically get better. |

You could also do like 80% of the Training Ground major posters and be a Logibro... though they're not all bad gun-game...
I've ranked first without ever firing a shot before.
But if you REALLY want to work on your gun game, get a lvl1 laser and stand about 20-30m behind your teammates getting assists. You'll learn how to shift your sight or body strafe with enemy movement and then you'll be much better with ARs. Shottys and SMG are so close range they require almost twitch reaction to enemy movements. |

One piece of advice i can think of that will not only help with shooting but help in survivability is not to rush into pulling the trigger.
Get used to being aware of your surroundings and start picking fights that are in your favor instead of stumbling into fights that arnt, wait till the moment is right, line up the shot, then pull the trigger. Its no easy feat but if you can think along those lines then you will find you get alot more kills and alot less deaths.
Practice hiding, practice watching movements, and dont just shoot at the first spot of red you see.
Dont commit to a fight unless you know you will win, and practice not commiting to fights.

!!!!!!!!!!! I <3 you OP!
OK
So the first thing that you need to do is practice. The more you play, the better you'll get! What's nice about FPS games is that the skills learned seem to transfer well between games. Also, use the controller and not a KB+M.
YouTube videos are another great thing. Watch what other people do from their point of view. Make sure you watch someone with an assault rifle.
You can google "get better at fps games" and you'll see many articles which give similar tips.
Unfortunately, there really are not too many "gun-game" choices. There's the AR, the SMG, and the Pistol. Don't use the laser or another weapon like that. I have no idea why people think the laser will improve your gun game as it is a continuous stream of light that you can just wave over people and kill them.
My suggestion is to stick with the AR. The SMG is good, but only at very close ranges. Pistols are fun, but you need to consistently be able to place rounds in other players' heads to make it successful. Make sure you're aiming with those weapons too. The SMG you might be able to hip fire, but AR and Pistol are definitely ADS (Aim Down (the) Sights) weapons.
Other than practice, there is really no other magical formula. People will say "skill points" go into ---> will make you good, or "certain gear" will make you good. It might help, but it won't make you any better. I tested it out recently with other people. If you are a competent player, you can create a new character (arbiter), NOT spend ANY of your skill points, buy no gear and just use the Assault - Frontline fit, and go 3:1 or 4:1 (kills to deaths) while playing the objectives (ie not just going for kills or not sacrificing yourself to cover an objective).
I will say, having done it myself in other games, that it can be frustrating. The nice thing is that if you compare yourself (how you are now) to how you were a week or two ago, or when you first started, you'll realize how much you've improved. This game doesn't have a single player campaign mode yet, so you'll have to just get better in multiplayer matches only. You might be able to improve by player the single player mode of almost any big name FPS game too, but what really matters is that you're practicing. Getting a squad helps too. There's a looking for groups channel or something that they've set up. Use a mic! Just be willing to hear people tell you how to play in ways that won't help you at all lol.
Have fun ^_^
p.s. > stick with assault suit > use an assault rifle (AR) > shield extenders > only use what you can afford. If you die too much and aren't making money, use a cheaper fit or militia or starter only until you can make some $. |

Start with center of mass shots first, work up to head shots.
Lots of good suggestions, but also try firing in bursts and not holding down the fire button. Just hold it for about 1 second per burst, half second to reline up your shot, then 1 second burst again.
Don't go caught up in head to head 1v1 fights. Stay near some people and help shoot, itll give you more time to aim without being under pressure.
Run from any fight you didn't start or aren't prepared for
Try running a militia Heavy suit and an Assault Rifle, and throw some armor plates on it. People may give you crap for it but it'll give you time to shoot without needing to worry about getting killed right away. Being super slow will help slow you down too and make you less erratic while shooting.
Drop your sensitivity, if you're too sensitive you're gonna over shoot and get juked too easily, which results in spray and pray.
Stick with AR's for now. Shotguns are great buuuuut accuracy is sort of a non-issue.
Stay calm. If you get frustrated you'll do dumber stuff and overcompensate. Even if you've died 10 times and have barely scratched someone don't get worked up, just keep trying

If you're aren't getting any return fire you'll have more time to work on your aim. Therefore I suggest running with a heavy, waiting for him to engage a red then running a flank on the guy he's shooting. You may steal a few of his kills but overall you'll be helping him out and improving your aim with less risk. I read you wanted to work on your solo game but... this really isn't, not unless you are a rambo type straight up. And without great aim, running solo won't work.

It's not that I want to lonewolf it, it's just that I want to provide something for my corp/squad that isn't cover fire/meat shield. I figured the best way to improve my skills was to run without any backup, because it would force me to play more carefully. |

Well it ain't that easy, that's when Dust's RPG mechanics come to place. You have to invest in shield extenders, armor repair and huge guns!!!! I'm thinking doing mine with a big nice railgun.
But yeah practice with militia tanks first till you get used to them, it's what I'm doing with dropships. |

Sloth I realized this game ain't a conventional FPS. I'm also getting killed a lot. You have to remember that the veteran loadouts are much better than the standard militia equipment. If you want to win, you also have to dedicate time to build a good dropsuit loadout. This is one of the reasons I'm mostly sticking to the group instead of solo. I know that with my current loadout, I'll never win 1vs1 vs a veteran, both full HP. |

I've seen people with s 0.02 KDR, and 37 kills. If you do the math, that means they've died about 1850 times. So that 1.05 KDR is not bad at all when compared to those... people.
Anyways, you should win 1v1 without too much gear to win. Don't be one of those Proto-AUR try hards because it's the only way they can kill guys in militia ^.^ |

In order to improve in anything, there are some things you needs to focus on and think about.
Don't be discouraged. Improvement is a long process, it may take you 10 minutes or 10 years to master something. Don't expect to be topping the charts anytime soon.
Don't compare yourself to others, only to yourself. It doesn't matter if people are going 30-0 on the scoreboard, it only matters what you are doing. If you were getting 0-15 kills, and you worked on your skills, going 1-14 consistantly should be something to celebrate, as it shows your moving in the right direction.
Set realistic small goals, and work on achieving those goals. Again, don't focus on going 30-0, pick something much more attainable. it does not have to be anything major like a certain number of kills. But setting a goal of hitting one enemy player with all shots fired, even if the enemy doesn't die, even if you still get killed. you at least achieved that goal. You can then build on those small goals and after each milestone is reached, you move on to a new goal.
Learn from your mistakes and set-backs. No one improves on a steady incline. You may plateau, or dip down, as long as you can recognize why you are failing and set a goal to correct that mistake you will learn. If you find yourself running out in the open and you get sniped, set a goal to not run out or at least run in a serpentine pattern.
There is no knowledge that is not power. Learning from your mistakes is great, but it also helps when you know why you failed. For example, knowing the optimal range of all weapons in order to better know how to face them or use them will go along way in helping your improve. Some of this knowledge can be attained by the forums, but book learning is useless without practicing it in a real life setting. Set goals to make better use of the knowledge you have learned.
Never stop improving, even once you reach a level of skill, that shows you are so much better than when you started, you can still regress or get complacent. If you notice you are back sliding, find out why. You may need to spice up your routine, find a new goal, of playstyle to get excited about and repeat the improvement all over again.

I run basic enforcer for pub matches.
As for goals, I guess I'll start by getting back up to 1.06
I just haven't played a shooter since Halo 2 like back in 07 (though I did play MW2 for like a week but quit since I sucked so much) so my aim is off. But yeah, I plan to keep at it. |
