Today I got into a rather heated argument with my roommate about marketing strategies for DUST. I was supporting the stance that this transfer to tranquility and the move to open beta was to promote a consistent population to combat recent loss due to community fatigue. With maybe a 5-10% growth.
He was of the opinion that the move to open beta was going to promote a population explosion of 50-80% current client base. And that it was not only an Ideal outcome but necessary.
So here are my inquiry. - What is the actual intended growth, if any, for open Beta? - This one is a bit more difficult, and i do not fully expect an answer. When can, or should, we expect a promotional marketing explosion. David Reid has said CCP has a strategy, involving third party press.(Which for the most part, has not been kind.) But never fully elaborated upon what we can expect.
Any input is appreciated. |

When open beta comes, EVERYONE with a PSN account and a PS3 will be able to download and try it. I would be surprised if the population doesn't massively increase. |

Yes anyone will be free to try Dust, but how will they know about it? What will convince them to bother with the rather hefty download in the first place? |

We played and interview we held with CCP CmdrWang on Saturday. I asked him pretty much this exact question. He said they where hoping for a PCU similar to what they hit with EVE on a regular basis. |

That's the angle I'm approaching this with, there is nothing promoting the Open Beta except that it's now easier to gain access. I think folks are over estimating the influx of new players. And we should put a cap on that disappointment now.
Having said that, the game has many current flaws especially to new and inexperienced players. With as fickle as the console FPS general community is, I don't want this to be the first impression they get. (I know its already too late, and that this is happening.) Its good, its getting better (arguably, and on a case by case basis.) but at first glance is a bit lacking, and console players rarely read further into something before passing misguided judgement. Plus heaps of obviously missing equipment and skills limits the games appeal and uniqueness. I am of the opinion that an explosion at this moment in time would be, at minimum. More of an overall detriment to the game, and community as a whole. My roommate disagrees. |

Well if you have the game download in the background while you play a single player game (or offline multiplayer/co-op), the download can be quite manageable (or time consuming, depending on your internet service). As for HD space, it would be up to the player to decide whether it's worth it to delete some stuff to make room for Dust.
As for how people will know, I'm thinking Sony will help on that end by putting the news of the open beta on the ticker feed in the top right hand corner, in the "What's new?" section of the xmb, and give dust a place on the front of the PS store. Whether that will happen or not, we'll see tomorrow.
Edit: As to what the OP is gettting at, I would also like to know what CCP will do. I wonder if this has to do with one of the concerns that CSM raised when they met with CCP. |

Adverts, people being able to freely talk about it on forums. News sites being able to report on about dust now.
I think once it gets around, we will have a good following. Look at home, people are always on that. |

I'm assuming it will just show up on the what's new section on the playstation on the top right when you first turn on the ps3. That's how I learned that the God of War beta was now available... |

I too learn of free games by checking out the ticker on the XMB screen. I have low expectations for the increase in players tommoro. |

Question is how many will stick around, everyone knows first impressions are crucial. |

We've seen no new adverts, trailers, or concept art. There have already been third party reviews of DUST 514, new PS3's come with it pre-installed. the Merc Pack has been advertised via the whats new ticker. What i am saying is that I am expecting tomorrow to be business as usual. maybe with a few people here and there nothing more. but again the purpose of this thread is to get some DEV/GM input on the subject. |

That's actually an issue, those that stick around in this game are those that look past its currently rough exterior for the potential gem underneath. |
