Probably no plan for it right now but (and this is just my speculation)....
within the next 3-5 years (and especially with the next gen systems in 2013/2014) I would expect nearly all gaming to move toward 3D support. It's something that's long past due! 3D capability is something that's been tried many times over the past 50-60 years or so but just never caught fire with the general public for whatever reason (timing, technology, etc.).
However, in the past few years we have seen it finally starting to gain some footing in the market as the technology has improved and higher screen resolution has made it more immersive and believable. The newest HD tech to hit the market brings us 2160p resolution (4 times that of 'Full HD, 1080p). While pricing is keeping it slightly out of range for most of us for the moment, it's not something that will remain unaffordable forever.
What many people aren't aware of is that not only does 2160p resolution provide the big screen theater image on your living room television, it also finally brings us 3D viewing without the use of any type of glasses. It's the idea of wearing those glasses that has kept most people from making the leap to 3D viewing in their homes. Soon, wearing glasses for 3D viewing will be a thing of the past and as they become a fading memory and a page in tech history I would expect 3DTV to finally become the in-home standard.
OK...I got a little off there, but it was for a reason. Once 2160p and glasses-free 3D become the norm in most every home, I would think that non-3D gaming will be an unacceptable relic. That would mean that all games made 3-5 years from now (maybe sooner) and forward, will likely support 3D. That would put this new standard of console gaming and HDTV viewing right in the early days of the next gen console lifespan, which will probably be coming late this year or next.
In short...maybe 3D isn't on the radar yet for Dust, but if it's something they expect to keep running well into the next gen PS4/Orbis (or whatever it's called) then I would nearly guarantee a 3D Dust514 in the coming years. I just don't see any way to avoid it aside from a huge lull in technology advancement...and that's highly doubtful to happen! Of course, anything is possible!
One other thing that could possibly happen to keep 3D gaming from becoming the standard instead of the option would be the discovery and marketing of some new home entertainment technology that hasn't been pushed for yet. Obviously if people had the option to play in some sort of lifesized, holographic gaming virtual world for no more cost than a 3DTV we would all jump on that boat. What gamer in his/her right mind would pass up 100% immersion into a life-sized gaming arena with full sound, touch, smell and visual sensory for simple 3D viewing? I sure as Hell wouldn't!
