Greetings,
So I had a chance to play with Sniping over the weekend and I have to say the current implementation is a bit weak.
With the weakness of the current scoping system, the sniper will be forced to go after assaults and heavies instead of their proper targets, logistics and command. In the game currently their scoping range is limited to less than 200 meters. One way to help resolve this is to increase the current zoom by about 100% - 250%. While it is true that snipers can focus on shorter distances, their ideal scoping range should be between 300 - 700 meters.
Snipers should never be anywhere close to the "objectives" which means that they shouldn't be hacking or "fighting", killing yes, but never fighting. What this means is that snipers will be gaining SP much slower than Dropship pilots. I think one way to help solve this is to add a bonus for "timing". If someone takes out a target within say half a second of the target starting a hack, dropping RE, requesting an ROV drop, etc the shooter should get an SP bonus... Please note that I am still against bonuses for the quality of the target with the exception of basic armor class (See below).
A sniper's proper prey is C&C and Logistics and they should get a bonus for taking those targets down. A command suit should give a good sized bonus to SP, say about 10% while a logistics suit should give roughly 5%, and let's be generous and give a 3% bonus for pilots.
Charge Sniper weapons should only fire while in ADS, retaining charge if you release ADS while holding the charge. This will allow charge snipers to re-position without losing a round. Please note that I am not asking to retain a charge across major status / weapon change, so you won't keep your charge if you break into a sprint or swap to your sidearm, but you also won't fire your weapon.
For some reason the sniper scope does not appear to feed TACNET. I base this off of my experiences where I scoped a target but saw no info / data about them.... They were only about 90ish meters away from me and they were adversaries... And they ended up hacking one of the terminals because I had written them off already. A simple way to resolve this is, to always add friendlies to TACNET / keep their position updated.... With this in place, if I scope it an no info comes up it is hostile... Period.
Sniper damage is a bit on the low side. Unless we are seeing the final values for dropsuit resists / EHP, then the Sniper rifles need a damage increase of about 20%. If we are seeing the final values the Sniper needs a damage increase of about 8 - 10%. I base this on testing with three damage increase mods, level 5 weaponry skill and moderate sniping skill against stationary targets at 83 meters, and a fully charged charge sniper rifle. |

In regards to the damage, you can increase this with skills. Have you tried spending SP on the Sniper Rifile skill yet? I find I can kill any Assault with my Sniper with the exception of Proto which are left with about 50 HP.
As for range, I've been happy with it, but more is better.
Also, what you suggested about losing a round is in the game. If you have charged the sniper rifle and break into a sprint you don't lose the round. I have seen where I thought I was charging it but wasn't though, so you are right this does need to be addressed.
I can understand why the data isn't there when using a scope/site (you can't see health with any scope) - I consider it the drawback to having better aim and don't see a need to change. I can see your point though. |

By the way - I still haven't learned how to drive. Damn Texas school system... Friends and enemy alike, beware standing in my way when I'm driving the LAV - and beware riding with me - the damn thing flips like a kid on a trampoline. |

the range is pretty impressive, from the of the coms tower with a l4 in sniper skills you can 1 shot someone on the north ridge, prob a noob with little shield skills but it is possible. I totally agree with the no stats part, best bet for now, let the shot fly and if its friendly, he's fine, if he's foe, he's not fine. I use the he's fine loosely since he prob got a bit of a suprise and is wondering where the hell he got shot from |

Yes, I have Sniper 4, weaponry 5, and as I stated I had three damage increase modules, and I was using a Charged Sniper Rifle (Highest damage). Now because of the version of the damage modules I was using and because I don't have Sniper 5, I was doing roughly 17% below maximum possible damage, until leadership skills are added of course.

What my range request would allow for is improved target discrimination which is extremely poor right now with the Sniper Rifle. Please note that this is not really affected by any skill, yes your effective range is but not your sight range and that is what I am asking for an increase to,

Feel like being in the drop ship when I try this?
Oh and no the charge thing, it might be a contact problem on the controller? I know mine is pretty sensitive and there are times when walking it goes off. Or perhaps it is a sensitivity issue with the game, in which case CCP can see about fixing it.
By they by - my PNID is thundre77, in case we lose our names when the game goes live or after the patch on Friday. I'd hate to lose contact with one of the good guys in the game... |

As I posted this just before the recent 2.0 release, I thought I would update / comment based on my one night trial if 2.0.

While it is true that snipers can focus on shorter distances, their ideal scoping range should be between 300 - 700 meters. This does not appear to have been altered at all and while some say it is fine where it is, I still say the scoping range needs a dramatic improvement. Last night, while sitting on top of the old tower B, I scoped a target standing on the walking bridge between the old A and C (This is the communication map BTW). According the distance gauges from pre-2.0 this distance is less than 85 meters. The target's head should have taken up about 20 - 25% of the sight picture at that range, instead their head was not much bigger than the target pip.
Even though I wasn't expecting an improvement, I decided to try this from the hills outside of the old A - B gate. At about 200ish meters what I found was that I could see the individual chevrons, but not the targets themselves... I know they were not moving behind walls because of where they were shooting / being shot at.... People generally do not have gunfights without a target of some kind.

I didn't have enough matches, but it does appear that there was some change here. In one of my matches, I managed to take down two logistic suits and got more SP than I had on my previous match when I just took out assaults and scouts... Again, this was only one night so I might have just been imagining it, but it did appear the quality of the kills affected my SP.

They were only about 90ish meters away from me and they were adversaries... This appears to have gotten better (see above), however, I did notice that my scope was still not feeding TACNET... As such, even though I had a tank scoped, at 120ish meters, it still did not show up on a squad mate's minimap... The tank ended up finding him before he found them. :(

With the skill wipe, I am not able to compare my kills last night with my previous ones, however, I did notice that I was much more effective against heavies than I had been previously which is most likely due to the nerf on heavies.
Other than that, I was very happy overall with the new Sniping and found that it felt more real than it had previously. I look forward to testing this a lot more this coming weekend.

I find the draw (render) distance for most things relatively short range, as a sniper.. that makes my game riskier since I either cant see the things I should be shooting or the fof indicator isnt there causing friendly fire incidents. |

So, I was mistaken about my PNID - it's really just Thundre. I'm not a big user of the PlayStation Network :) |
