I just started playing EVE again after a few years absence, and one thing that caught my eye was the Mastery levels of each ship.
Let me explain to those that don't play EVE. Each ship have 5 levels of "Mastery" (each with a flashy icon), which is based purely on your current level of skills. Each level have multiple skill "requirements" to be fulfilled, divided into skill categories.
To translate this to Dust, let's take the Caldari Medium frame Dropsuite. Level I Core Upgrades [1 / 3] --> this is the skill categories with current fulfilled vs the total number of requirements - (X) Dropsuite Core Upgrades I --> this is the skill list "requirements" to obtain Level I Mastery - ( ) Electronics I - ( ) Engineering I Dropsuite Command [1 / 1] - (X) Caldari Medium Frame
Level II Core Upgrades [0 / 4] - ( ) Dropsuite Core Upgrades II - ( ) Electronics II - ( ) Engineering I - ( ) active scanner I Dropsuite Command [0 / 1] - ( ) Caldari Medium Frame II
And so on... (Please note the above examples were just taken from the top of my head )
This system gave me (in EVE) something to strive for more than just, ohhhh I can use this ship / dropsuite. It also gave me some serious pointers of where I probably want to spend my skill points to make the most of my ship, which can be great for new people. Of course, EVEs skill system is much more complex than Dust, so there is more you can do with it (more interesting combinations), but I believe Dust could implement something similar but simpler.

This would significantly improve a new players perspective on what goes into dropsuits, weaponry, and vehicles. You sir, get a plus one.
Could go either in the "Show Info" panel of dropsuits, weapons, etc, or in the Skills/Character Sheet panel.

I take it the masteries don't actually grant anything?
Either way I see how this could be helpful as the newberries will no longer need to ask questions like "I want to be a logi, what skills should I go for?" as they can just look at the mastery requirements and use it as a simplified roadmap.
Hmmm. I suppose you could break it down to "General", "Advanced", and "Specialized" for starters. The general and advanced masteries would show players what core skills they are going to need. Specialized would be for specific aspects of the character (dropsuite/vehicles/weaponry)
The dropsuite portion would show what skills, other then the core skills, will be necessary. This includes the suit its self, modules, and equipment. The same goes for vehicles.
The weaponry portion would... well... this is actually self explanatory
Once the dropsuite(or vehicle) and weaponry portions are complete you can receive a title that represents your play style. This title can be displayed in the character sheet making it easier for players to organize squads and recruit mercs.
A few titles could be: Tactician / demolitions / driver / pilot / tanker / brute / medic / marksman / recon / infiltrator / newberry (have yet to earn a mastery) / rookie(obtained general mastery) / novice (obtained advanced mastery).
I would go into detail about the other titles but don't really feel like it. Because of the potential to obtain multiple titles I suppose you should be given the option select which of the titles you want to be displayed.
Well that was a random brainstorm and I ended up typing way more then I had planned (expected like 2 sentences). I suppose a TL:DR would be "Many ways to implement this but +1 either way"

A fine idea for improving NPE and something that CCP should look into.

I believe it's located under "Show Info" panel on ships in EVE, in the top header (it is just an icon showing your current Mastery level). When you select (klick) the symbol it shows a new window with all Mastery levels and their prerequisites, including green check marks of the ones you already furfilled.
I think a similar system in Dust should only be applicable on dropsuites and vehicles, since modules can be a bit tricky.
And who knows, they can even link this feature to future Trophies |
