What exactly does this do? I still can't hit a barn door at 10 paces (not that I've come across too many barns in game) and I have my Aim Assist on.
Does it actually do something when using a DS3 control pad and, if so, is there a negative factor built into the game for using it?

Does it actually do anything? And are there any penalties for doing so?
I was blazing away the last few games at targets which were clearly in the reticule and in the last game I did a total damage of about 218 points and in the game before that the damage total was zero.
In the latter case I was standing about four feet from the opposition and his head and feet were both almost off screen. It would be impossible to miss and I still had Aim Assist on.
As you can guess, I am desparate to improve my aiming; at this rate it's going to take 120 battles to get to level three of my suit skill as I average about 500 SP a battle.

dust is a bit backwards bro, you can do terrible and only make like %15 less SP than you would if you would have gone top score. if you are getting only 500 sp it is because your getting put in at the end of games. you should be getting around 3500-4000 and that's minus the 500 points you would get for killing 10 ppl. your not really missing much by not getting kills.
i once was decent at this gun game but dust hit detection was unique for lack of better term. i opted out of the gungame because i dont like the frame rate or the aim sensitivities have both kinda dated feel to me. also i'm not a fan of aim assist. so i gank with a mass driver/lav combo or i sometimes get the odd map that lets me call assault dropship that i have a nose cannon on, that is what keeps me coming back to dust the odd time i get to get a nose missle cannon kill is thrilling for me for some reason, or my gunner gets a kill i also get hyped.
one beauty is if you feel your gun game is bad you can play as support role, which i often do these days, flying a MLT dropship with a CRU and dropping CRU's on rooftops until i feel it's safe to call an expensive assault dropship, the MLT only cost me 44k compared to 500k.
also consider skilling up your core skills before getting the next tier of dropsuit in case you didn't already know.

Thanks. I am gettting 500 SP simply because my skills at Dust are as good as the Newcastle United back four, i.e. hopeless.
I will try with the Aim Assist off; who knows I may get a point for bringing down a passing hyper-pigeon.

I started playing this game during ' The Trials ' and didn't use aim assist when it came out. About 1.6 I decided to try it out and see what all the hub-bub was about. I really didn't see a difference myself. I turned it back off and haven't run with it again.
I'm not very good at this game but it seems to me that IF I can get good with out the Aim Assist then I'll be better off for it.
just my Opinion.

Aim assist helps you track a target by sticking to them as you move your cursor, that said, its mostly used for hipfire engagements at under 10 meters.
Try some automatic weapon engagements at under 10 meters with aim assist turned off if you want to know what it does, you can feel it pretty fast if your target starts strafing/bunny hoping faster than you can turn. |

I would say you are hurting yourself if you are not using it. As long as it exists and you aren't a redline sniper, it will give you an advantage. This game is all about advantages, guys aren't going to just throw down their proto rail rifle for a "fair fight", don't needlessly cripple yourself. Worry about learning to play without it if or when CCP gets rid of it. |

Aim assist does help, but aiming is DUST is still harder than in other FPS games I've played.
Here are some ticks that helped me...
1. Try setting the ADS (Aiming Down Sights) sensitivity setting to 10% and work your way up until you hit the value that works for you.
2. Sometimes with Aim Assist, less is more. For stationary/ far off targets, try getting the reticule close to the target with R3 and then use L3 for the final adjustment. If you're aim is not off by too much, Aim Assist will kick in and help.

I have a similar problem.
I think ultimately I'm just really bad at the twitch skills.
After a couple of days with the controller, I switched to keyboard and mouse. Now I'm a bit better, at least I don't miss 100% of the time, but still much worse than whoever is shooting at me.
There is another factor, and that may be that I don't understand weapon ranges. I tend to get killed by an RR or AR from ranges where their character is barely the size of my sights, where my weapon's dispersion is too big.
AA is totally not a factor, as I understand it, it only works when your reticule turns red, so it's "locked on". I'm not able to get my reticule to turn red on any moving target. |

We may have met.
The other night I ran into an opposing merc at whom I emptiied a magazine load of ammo from about four paces. And he did the same to me before we both ran away in our respective directions screaming like little girls.
At the end of the battle the totals stated that I gave and received no hits at all.*
So, either we met or the game was glitchy that day.

Aim assist is still huge for scrambler rifle. I recently just pulled my Viziam again because I have a super fast trigger finger and often forget to use it. Was in a match today and in several matches, I super rapid fired and even though I was way behind a few targets at times, it still hit them and killed them. Now it might have been lag, but I don't think so, as when I use CR, it doesn't do that.

One of the skills effects dispersion which essentially turns your firing from spray to pin point.
Some weapons start off with pin point accuracy ie HMG, RR and of course laser rifle.
Dispersion can work in your favour at close range and strafing. It works agains you at long range as it reduces your hits on target.
Kneeling and aiming down site both improve overall accuracy. |

Here's a good video showing Aim Assist in action. There's nothing in any patch notes that show that Aim Assist has been modified since this video was posted.

One thing that may be mucking up your aim is your connection, if you've got a tiny bit of lag you could be shooting where they used to be.

In no way is this a negative post, but let's keep things real. What if you're just bad at aiming? I was real bad when I first started. I was happy just getting one kill a match. Keep playing and practicing. You'll eventually, albeit slowly, get better. |

The AR Auto Assist is still ridiculous. I use KBM and cant hit anything with the AR. The CR and RR are fine but the spread on the AR is too much. Yet I find myself getting melted at medium-long range by GEKs |

I also suck at aiming, having skilled into advanced and finding that no, it wasn't the tier of equipment i was using, it really was just me all along. But given what i saw on that video posted last page, i've been playing this game wrong the whole time.... I ALWAYS use the right stick when aiming, and i ALWAYS lead my target. Apparently i'm supposed to fine tune my aim with the left stick, and follow my target. That is very counter-intuitive.
No wonder i wasn't getting better. You can't get better doing the wrong thing over and over.
I do not think i can brain this train.

If I try to use the left hand toggle-nobble then the rifle starts swaying and I am just as likely to shoot a passing raven as I am someone in the valley below.
I find that I can only get an approximate beading if I use the right hand toggle-nobble. Have I got mine set up wrong?

Spec into and learn to use uplinks. Not only will you help your team, but you will also gain a lot more than 500sp per round as a result. Hope this helps...Leadfoot
p.s. AA is quite weak, IMO, and doesn't help that much except on stationary or far off targets. Don't let the level of QQ fool you. |
