You know, I used to agree with this BUT I got much better trying to beat the experienced players with weaker gear. If you actually try to out play and not just "flank" then you will see some great results. I have about 4.7 mil in SP. They nerfed the Assault Rifle so I actually consider that I only have about 4mil even. They nerfed it so I don't use it, especially since it isn't as good as some other rifles.
Here is a little advice.
1) Use drop uplinks and keep them at least 110meters away from the Null in a good spot. Why? Because more experienced players use scanners and will detect them within as much as a 100 meters from the null point. If it is more than than then sometimes they will run out to try to take it out all by themselves. Get the jump on them with a grenade or from behind and then drop another. In addition, if you are going after a null and just dropped a good uplink, you want to wait until at least one or two people spawn before going after the NULL. Too often I see somebody run straight in by themselves. Wait for now on. You don't need a mic to have teamwork.
2) Use an active scanner. Even the militia one will help.
3) If you are having a really hard time deciding drop suits then I suggest moving toward the Minimatar Medium logistics. It requires 3 in M-Medium to activate. A second tier Logistics suit offers 2 awesome perks. 1) It increases hack speed 2) it gives you ALOT of versatility in making a strong fit.
4) A lot of times there is a rail gun turret near the origin spawn points (i.e. when the match first starts you are dropped very close to some turrets). Get there first and start taking out any Bolas or vehicles you see from afar. This buys you and the team a lot of time. Watch the battlefield from there as well. See what different people do and how they play. Look for holes you can exploit if you see it in the future.
5) Have multiple fits. Have at least two minimum fits. One should be meant to be quick with some endurance and the other is your frontline type. Once you break into logistics suits you will be able to really explore this.
6) The better weapons are all of the rifles except for the AR as far as I am concerned. Some may disaggree but I stand by this.
7) Let others do the rushing in and stay back and provide support fire. Sometimes it is just better to let others soften up the enemy and then you run in and finish them off. Sounds shady but it isn't. Even protos do this.
8) Stay mid ranged as often as possible. Close range and long range (non-snipe) requires some practice and SP investments. Staying midrange creates a more equal playing feild.
9) If you do ambush then definitely do nanite injectors...period. It is super helpful.
10) Get used to the auto aim and move left to right when on one on one fire fights because some protos still aren't used to that.
11) Use flux grenades on enemies and take out surrounding drop uplinks. Just takingout a drop uplink eleminates the ability for an enemy to get back up. Believe it or not this can change the tide of a losing battle. Most of the time they are so busy trying to fight they don't realize they can't spawn back.
Try some of these tips and see where it goes. I learned the hard way but now I really am doing quite well. I don't do squads...at all. I solo pubs all of the time. So it has been a harder road but worth it. |

Don't worry about going past tier two on weapons. Get at least tier two on logistics and play around for a while investing in modules for armor, shields, profile dampening, grenades, etc. After you get the fits you really like then start moving towards the tier three weapon. Youcan be very, very successful against strong proto builds with a good advanced build. I have an advanced build right now and I am very successful in comparison to a lot of others. Keep at it. |

So, I use the Rail Rifle and have a lot of success with it. It took me at least a few weeks of trying the side to side thing before I got the hang of it. Don't strafe in only one direction and fire. Instead, go side to side and avoid messing with the aim too much. There is an auto targeting mechanism that is pretty effective.
Try to shoot cor some extra armor or spend SP in that skill tree if you are dying from AR that quickly.
Don't be afraid to be silly either. I have a silly build where I goto an enemy bull with stacked precision enhancers and start the hack. Then I stop it when I see ppl on my screen and shot gun them in the face. It isn't really succesful but super fun.
Flux grenades has an additional use as well. It can take out tank shields. Even the tier one version does really well and a lot of tankers will flee when they use shields.
Also, stick to one toon and keep working it. Only do a second toon when you run out of weekly SP bonus. Kep the passive on the primary.
I have quite a few fits. My two primary fits are a hacking fit and a front line fit with stacked shields and armor modules on a tier two logistics suit. The hack fit is two tier two stamina based modules and a tier two ha k module. With three levels in hacking, logistics, and a tier two hack module I hack 45% faster than a base fit. The two stamina modules allow me to run from a spawn p Spawn point to a null without a vehicle. If you count the calling of a vehicle, I tend to get to the first null faster than everyone else.
Just play around and don't worry about winning until you hit at least 4mil sp. Even be silly. Some people put remotes on thier UAV and crash them I to tanks and deystroy them. It is pretty rad.
Ps. Typed this on my phone if you can't tell :P |

Zunist Tae wrote:Thanks to everyone who provided helpful feedback. Spent some time adjusting my Commando build... mostly using the tier one suit with an adv shotgun, basic RR, and quantum scanner. Also waiting to find a squad till am I'm a match... let's me squad up without having to have ears on (to many player in Mic only groups don't use ptt, and I'm tired of listening to them yelling at/getting yelled at by family).
Also trying to master the left/right same everyone's been killing me with. Still irritates me that it's valid, but I'm trying. Combined with hanging back to scan/pick of stragglers my dust experience is slowly improving.
That us great to hear. I'm due to start dabbling into a commando myself. Have a little bit more ways to go in sniping before then though. Btw, If you start getting too tight on money too often then dabble in sniping. You die significantly less. Lately I open a skirmish by hacking the first are null and surrounding. I hide two good drop uplinks at the second one. After my first death m, I switch to snipe mode. Been kind of fun. |

Unfortunately, there isn't a large enough player sample/base for matchmaking to get fixed. I stand by something I've written in other threads. Everyone should have equal access to all gear, make specialty modules for AUR, and allow the natural limitations to restrict the ability for new players to really do things they fantasize about. CPU/PG naturally limits what you can put it in a suit just like a lot of Skills that increase that output and decrease the amount used by certain gear. In addition, a poor player will still die often and thus wouldn't be able to afford high ISK costs and would eventually have to grind with a lower tier fit anyway. The gap will still exist between low SP players and high SP players. |
