...at least for me. But I'm sure it's the same for many of you.
This is my first "Respec thread". I've never been asking for one, nor I've been a fan of Respecs.
I've always despised FOTM chasers and that's why I always said "no" to Respecs. I think it's fair they have to deal with that 1.500.000 spent into Flaylock Pistols, because let's be perfectly honest here, how many people actually specced into it just because they liked the real feel of the weapon and the idea behind it?
But at this point, there are too many factors to count in. First let's see the "cons", the actual negative aspects of a Respec:
- FOTM chasers would no longer suffer because of their blameworthy choices.
- New free chance for everyone to embrace the current FOTM's.
However, this would not be that tragic. Why?
+ FOTM chasers still had their "punishment". They still had their SP locked into no-longer-OP stuff for several months.
+ At this point, many players have access to almost anything and the real FOTM chasers are people with maxed out passive skills who can spare lots of SP. I'm using a particular player as example (no name and shame, but I'm thinking at a very specific person), who used to run the Flaylock in 1.2. The first day of 1.3 I saw him running Freedom Mass Driver. Since 1.4 he uses a Duvolle. This player is very high on the Leaderboards, but there are many players with crazy amounts of SP out there. So I doubt that a Respec would make things significantly worse.
Now, let's see why a Respec would be a bless for this game:
+ Newer players would benefit from a Respec much more than vets. New players make errors allocating their SP and vets already had Respecs to re-allocate those SP. Also, new players have just one main weapon and maybe a barely trained sidearm. There's a considerable chance that that weapon suffered from an excessive nerf and it's no longer competitive, meaning the new player is f... in a really bad situation.
+ CCP constantly changes everything and, even though their buffs are generally very well done, whenever they nerf something, they hit really hard and they leave it that way for extremely long amounts of time before they even consider the possibility that they actually exaggerated.
+ Some new content is about to be released and many people would never have spent their SP into AR in first place if there were the Combat and the Rail Rifle.
+ Not saying it would be like playing a completely new game, but leaving our old suits and weapons for new ones would give an extreme replay-value to DUST 514. Not only people make mistakes and CCP constantly change the weapon balance, sometimes we simply find out that we love so much another weapon/suit we had not the chance to test long enough. You can't simply do an Alt to test evrey single weapon, every single suit, every single vehicle in the game.
+ The Vehicle skill tree is about to be completely redesigned, so obviously we're getting our SP back. This is perfectly fair, but at this point I think that infantry deserves this chance as well. This is the right opportunity to let everyone choose his/her own role in this game.
A free Respec for everyone in 1.7 could save this game.
CCP, this part is especially addressed to you: If your final goal is to have everything balanced, you should be much more reactive on adjusting stuff. Nerfing something into the ground is not balance. After a nerf, you should open a Feedback thread about it and be ready to adjust the numbers even further. If the community says "Laser Rfiles need love", you can't wait 5 months and then reply "we are aware of this, we might be doing something about it in the future". NO! This is so wrong: Keep tweaking! Trial-error, trial-error! Keep tweaking the Laser Rifle consistently until the majority of the community is happy about it. If you insist with your current method, this game will be dead before you bring balance and make everybody happy. Until you're not able to do this, you should give a Respec every 6 months. This is not a game where you can just move to another weapon without consequences. We have SP here. Thank you.

+1 I completely agree. I just recently hit 5m sp and i've wasted about 1.7m into nova knives(I have fun with them but they are just not practical for actual play when your a cheap assplayer.), a respect would allow me to "fix" my SP and put it into what would actually help me.
I die alot AND have fun...

to ccp specifically: this guy is clueless.
First, would you mind usingl logic (just like I did) to explain why it would hurt new players?
Second, this is my particular input about respecs and I am entitled to express my unique opinion.
Last, no, I'm not clueless and I'm a woman, thank you very much.
Please, use logic to validate your opinions or don't post at all.

Sounds good Keri . I really liked what you said at the end about after a change , that a feedback thread should be in place . That makes since , sounds too right , wouldn't be hard and would make all the difference .
I see some reasoning here , seeing as how new weapons and items are released , older items and weapons become obsolete ( lack of usage ) and it's kind of a waste to have skill points locked into items that are of no use .
Makes since . It might be 2020 before this game is the way that the DEV's would " like it " because of the facts , like you have stated , about the long time periods before something is done ( if at all ) about particular issues and miscues .
The only real thing that this game has over others ( my opinion ) is that , every year I don't have to shell out x amount of dollars for a game that's basically the same , with a few twist . If another company and DEV team would do the same then this wouldn't even be a contest . I'm kind of tired of the jumping threw hoops , having information ( that's vital to game development ) ignored and not even acknowledge by the team ( except on certain issues and most of the time they are of NO relevance ) , the inter squabbling by the collective and just feeling like as one who plays this game , I have a feeling of having NO relevance especially when I am asked for some feedback .
Good job Keri and keep up the good work .

Call it a grand re-launch as a way to try to lure as many people as possible back into this game. This. A one-time respec when all racial suits, and vehicles are available. New suits and vehicles should always be released across all races from then on. The most compelling argument for this is it would otherwise create weird demand issues for weapons, suits and vehicles, which could translate into weird demand issues for LP items and could adversely affect the balance of FW. I also think marketing as DUST 2.0 might see a new series of reviews from the gaming press, which is desperately needed.
I'm hoping we get there by next fanfest.
Also, we probably didn't need ANOTHER respec thread...

Since the majority of Respec threads are something like "CCP pleaze give me respect naaaoooo", I thought it was a good idea to articulate this discussion, bringing out not only the pros but the cons as well.

very clever.
a class system is a system that restricts what you're allowed to skill into. that does not exist within eve, as there's no top end to the amount of skillpoints you can have.

As a player who also has been steadfastly against respecs thus far, I think that the respec should wait until all new weapons, armor and vehicles are in or during the period where any new weapon/vehicle is released for the reasons you have listed. You make some strong points and have persuaded me to your side. I have 3 weapons Protoed atm and wouldn't mind trading one of those for a Combat rifle Protoed. +1

I'm against SP respecs for the reason of trying new things, standard gear doesn't take that much SP, and if you really want/need something at proto than you can grind like a new player has to. I'm also against respecs because of tweaks to unbalanced things, this game is changing enough that unless you really enjoy what your using because it's fun and not because it has a distinct advantage.
That said, a partial respec for drastic vehicle changes isn't a bad idea. People could use the SP however they wanted too and they wouldn't forced to stick with something that is fundamentally different. As for the new suits and weapons coming into play, only if it was a large enough expansion to warrant it, but with the slow rate of content, it's not too hard to save up. The idea of giving one to new players only wouldn't be a bad idea, as long as they knew they'd get no others.
The first Uprising respec was somewhat balanced, the second one saw the huge rise in Caldari logis, many of which now call for another respec. This here lies the problem of why we shouldn't have more respecs unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. Give one and people will expect more, and people won't understand that they have to be responsible for how they spend their SP. Coming from EVE you pay for every SP, so I don't get this argument that people are "entitled" to a respec in a free to play game.
CCP has to release all the racial versions of suits, rifles, and vehicles in play now before the whole respec debate dies. For now it's best to assume there won't be any respecs, and the safest SP investment is in cores like armor, shields, engineering, and electronics.
