I really think that the skill trees in this game need a serious reworking. Its hard to describe but I feel like it could be so much deeper and meaningful than it is right now. There isn't any feel of progression. It isn't very deep and there is little satisfaction felt when I unlock that one suit or weapon. At least that's how i feel. To me its just "awesome now i don't have to grind for this anymore, whats next?" The skills don't effect each other at all either. In EVE for example before you can train into Mining barges there's at least 5 or 6 other skills you need to operate it at a minimum. I always wonder why that is not in Dust. Im not saying it has to be copied but this would add a level of complexity to an otherwise boring and lackluster tree. IMO
I think the skill trees need to be reworked and the pathways to different suits need changing. Here is something I thought up. Im not good at making flowcharts and graphs and stuff so ill do my best here to lay out simply This is for just one race tree
[Dropsuit Command] | ["Race" Medium Frame] | ["Race" Light Frame].........................["Race"Specialized Medium Frame].........................["Race" Heavy Frame] |........................................................................................................................................................| ["Race" Specialized Light Frame].......................................................................................["Race" Specialized Heavy Frame]
Technically the way I think of it is that Heavy and Light suits are specialized classes of their own. Most players will use the medium frame and those who don't are limiting their usefulness in one area to excel in another. Have at Medium Frame lvl 3 the player unlocks access to certain Specialized medium suits as well as heavy and light frames. If the player continues in medium suits he can skill into better suits such as Assault, Logi, upcoming Crusader, and whatever other specializations come as the "Race" Medium Frame is lvled.
When the player skills into Heavy and Light Frames they start with basic suits and then specialize at lvl 3 ex. Sentinel, Commando, Scout, Pilot
I also think that there needs to be additional requirements to using a suit. Before using a specialized suit there should be prerequisites. For example to use the logi suit a player must have nanocircuitry at a certain lvl as well, to use sentinel they must also have armor plating, something like the crusader suit should require Medium Frame at lvl 5 and other prereqs, etc The basic frames need to retain their usefulness even though a player has specialized
I really think that we should do away with tiers and move towards more specializations. Tiers cause much of the protostomping and imbalance between new and old players. Make Militia = ADV and then make everything else = PRO I understand why tiers were introduced. Most MMOs use them and its a big part of the AURUM thing. Using higher tiers before you are skilled into them in exchange for Real $. But in the long run it really is hurting the game.
Instead give us lots and lots of specializations. Sentinel tanks damage, why cant there be a heavy about dealing it? What about a Grenadier suit or Spec Ops Medium frame? I think using AURUM for cosmetics, BPOs, packages, and boosters is enough.
In general just make the skill tree deeper with skills that effect each other and tiericide dropsuits and weapons. Leave modules in tiers because there needs to be options. I also think the weapon tree needs to be streamlined. Give skills that affect weapon classes as a whole. But thats a different topic

But, since I have started playing I have always been a scout. Nothing but a scout. Forcing us to play as a certain type of infantry just kind of feels...wrong.

Why should you have to dump SP into medium suits to use a different size?
Horrible idea, and you should feel horrible. |

Way to go champ. I love the originality.
Anyway. I think it should go something like race Dropsuit command which unlocks basics for every frame, STD to proto for levels 1 to 5 respectively, and then make each specialization branch off of that and require equal or greater level in the race Dropsuit command level. So if you want a minmatar proto logistics you'd need minmatar proto Dropsuit command and the lvl 5 logistics role as well.
Also I think that weapons should follow by race as well. Instead of light weapon Ops we could have Caldari weapon Ops. Again, offering specializations which branch from there. For example if I have Gallente weapons to 5, I can use the duvolle as normal but if I then have my specialization in AR to 5, I can then use the allotek burst rifle.
Not sure if that's any different than your suggestion. Sorry if I didn't make any sense. |
