There's plenty of sides to this argument on what's more important. I shall now voice the proper-truth of an opinion as your self-elected voice does on every subject.
Since CCP has started adding content the game was spiraled out of control into this piece of garbage we play today.
A games content built on a bad, unpolished engine, means the content will be bad when the game engine (hopefully probably not at this rate) means the content will have to be completely reworked and rebuilt. Content being added to this game at all is completely worthless and will have to be reworked multiple times throughout the polishment of this game.
CCP kill your content team. focus all funds on core gameplay, REMOVE content. (Oh god racial suits/flaylock/massdriver/flux/contact) and fix the ******* engine before you try to build a game.
I will remind you of this again CCP.
You promised me an Esports game. I am waiting for your deliverance of this promise. |

CCP has been "polishing" this game for nearly 5 years...as i said in another thread; perfect balance is IMPOSSIBLE.
Best way to balance a game, is to make people forget about balance.. and you do that with NEW CONTENT. Give us shiny things to look at, and no one will care about the core mechanics not being perfectly "polish". |

Content is always nice because it keeps the game from becoming stale.
For example I'm just sitting on SP at the moment because I have everything I want, so now I'm like "now what?" |

Both mechanics and content need polish.
Better polished models mean better performance. Better polished terrain means more strategic gameplay. Better polished sockets mean better performance and gameplay improvements. Better polished items simplifies learning while providing deeper tactical choices.
Everyone can help polish a game. It's not just the coders. |

Polish KEEPS players in. I would say that in normal circumstances, this is right on the money. A game needs both, and they need to be intelligently iterated upon, since they depend on each other.
New content needs polished foundations to stand on, and polish needs new content to avoid stagnation.
But our situation in DUST right now is different. When core mechanics are fundamentally not working reliably and when controls are awkward, clunky and unreliable, all bets are off. This is especially true for an FPS.
A mess like that is justifiably called an emergency situation, and if a game wants to survive it needs to address those core issues pronto. And once the technical issues are fixed, there still remains the deep hole that marketing and PR have to dig the game out of. This is justice at work, since marketing and PR helped dig the hole in the first place.
That is the situation CCP is in now - emergency technical damage control followed by a brilliant re-marketing campaign.
On the plus side, there's hope because the idea of DUST 514 and, on a larger scale, New Eden is so epically cool that peeps will cut CCP a lot of slack as a developer.
Unfortunately, CCP have already used up most of that slack in tying their own noose ;) |

if you don't have all passives at maximum you're not close to finished. and you have no vehicles? no AV? you're a failure. |

If you could read I said that wasn't the entire list, I have vehicle and turret skills as well. I don't have AV because I'm not an AV player.
Anywho I'm done wasting my time explaining my role and skills in DUST to a whiny ***** from NF complaining about the game.

I would say it's the exact opposite, proof being E3.Everything there is shown with the polish to attract the players, after that, the content is what keeps them playing.Just look at BF3 for example. The first thing they showed what a highly polished shooter.Only weeks later did we get word of commander mode and other content.
In the console market space, first impression means EVERYTHING,and to attract an extremely large number of people to your game,it has to shine like the Hope Diamond. This is why Dust HASN'T attracted nearly the numbers that it could have, because it's as dull as a rusty spoon. |

CCP can have a million items of content but if the core mechanics are bad, those new players are not goong stay.
Personally this is a path I think should be followed....
1.Staying in PS3 is a death sentence. 2.New engine for the PS4 ( assuming it plans to stay in the console ) 3.Every racial gear in game made to reflect the perceived race ( even as placeholder ) 4.Balance what you have in-game until it feels to be right spot ( Respec system most be in place) 5.Differentiate your game modes and develop more ( Domination is a 1 point skirmish nothing more...)
PC has to be removed since currently it is just a farmville of a big blue donut. Go add a player base market and you will have a monopolistic entity driving everybody out of business, ISK depreciating at higher rate decreasing the purchasing power of new players.
PVE will not save the game but it will add some kind of variety for players
6.Once you have start developing new content and DLCs

If all they do is focus on polish until all you tryhards are happy we won't be getting any new content for 20 years, or actually ever. There's always going to be something for you guys to complain about. Honestly the game now in it's current state is pretty darn fun at least in instant battle and faction warfare where everyone isn't trying to exploit every cheap tactic. If you've never missed a skill point cap, the game is bound to feel like a bore and you'll get fixated on every little minute "problem." Perhaps you should take a break so the game feels fresh again when you come back.
You cannot honestly believe that the addition of 3 new dropsuit frames, 3 new weapons, 2 new maps, 1 new equipment, and 1 new role has been the downfall of Dust 514. |

I haven't played in like over a week, and it isn't because of polish lol, I want an assault game mode like ut2004 or enemy territory had. The random maps are cool (something I always wanted) but the majority of play space doesn't change 8(
Personal preference I guess.
It is hard to polish anything if people are not playing to make sure it works, a lot of the things that have been OP have been that way for a long time and it just took someone using it (and then telling everyone on the damn forums how to do it) for it to become obvious. |

Content is needed to keep the attention of the active player base and bring some players badk to the game. New maps and another game mode would be a good start. But I feel strongly they need to add PVE content sooner then later. A squad sized based PVE match vs drones would be a good start. |

At this point I am content enough with Infantry Mechanics (vehicles still need work), that I am leaning on the content side. Much of the mechanics issues left infantry side are quirks that I can deal with. What I am having trouble with now, after about 14 months of significant gameplay, is boredom.
I love Skirmish style game modes, but the need for "something else" is real and hard to ignore anymore. More modes and more maps is what I want from the content side. I could care less about weapons, vehicles, gear and equipment.

You cannot honestly believe that the addition of 3 new dropsuit frames, 3 new weapons, 2 new maps, 1 new equipment, and 1 new role has been the downfall of Dust 514. It's not that adding those things has been the downfall of DUST. And ofc different teams are working simultaneously on different aspects of the game, and that's the way it should be.
The downfall of DUST has been severalfold. In order of importance:
1) Neglect of core mechanics. My opinion of core mechanics is not important here. Refer to metacritic.
2) Neglect of core supporting systems that bring to life the core shooter experience and enable player-created content(properly implemented comms, corp roles, intra-DUST player trading, a viable contract system). All of these features are crucial for the kind of shooter that DUST aspires to be. And giving players these tools would dampen to outcry for more content.
3) A foolish rush to commecial release, and the marketing tail obviously wagging the development dog. This is still a beta product. Marketing has a huge task ahead of it to dig DUST out from the PR hole it's dug itself into - and they can't do it without solid core mechanics.
More could be said, but this is the essence of what brought us to this point today. |
