Contrary to what most people believe; this game does, in fact, support both long distance and close quarters snipers.
As a new player you need to decide if this is what you want to do. And to be fair, I have heard the maps are smaller and other players are screaming for the blood of snipers to be nothing more than a memory of old men during times of war.
Too bad for them.
If you have decided you want to spec into sniping you are more than welcome to try and find me in game and I can give you verbal pointers on specifics you want to watch out for, but, at this moment, I can only offer my words.
Note: Snipers are silent killers who, by design, are meant to kill their prey in one fatal hit. (keep that in mind because it becomes important later on)
Long range sniping: Most commonly known as red-line snipers by those who, shall we say, don't like snipers; this method is extremely effective for those who run around in light suits and are willing to get into specializations that will keep their sniper running for quite some time. My response is, don't bother. By the time you get to that point that looks oh so tasty and high in the air, about six other snipers have eyeballed it before hand and are squabbling over the prime territory. (tho if you want a laugh, I have seen a single red sniper surrounded by five blues unaware of each-others existence until someone ran out of ammo and looked up)
As a long range sniper you want the ground. While it doesn't make sense immediately, the size of your map determines what kind of position you can hold. Cornering buildings just inside the red line can be helpful, but again, it's prime territory.
If you decide to choose this long version sniping (it's how I started out in the game), my recommendations are to Skill into basic Nano-Hives, an UP-link, and at least a step up from the basic sniper rifle. My true recommendation is the NT-511 but I'm biased since that is the only Rifle I use.
Be aware of your surroundings. While it might not seem like it in your eyes, that slight dip in the land can save your head from that guy winging his Super-Fast Tactical Sniper Rifle. (My terms for the tactical generally lean towards tacky but the shooting rate is nothing to sneeze at)
Move, god remember to move so that Heavy you weren't able to kill two minutes beforehand doesn't get a bead on you and chase you down in an LAV with a squad of assault suits with him.
Mid Range snipers actually do benefit from the tactical rifle, while it does a lower amount of damage and has less shots per clip, at that range your targets are larger and sometimes easier to hit.
Close quarters Snipers are those who can Hip shot a Strawberry or drop a heavy with their sniper rifle then quick scope into shooting that annoying guy standing on the roof. In this situation I seriously recommend a 5 round clip and the NT-511. Your back up weapon will most likely be a scrambler pistol or SMG, I recommend the SMG. I also say definitely drop serious scan precision, range enhancer, and profile dampeners on any of the above mentioned sniper styles.
For a kick, if you feel like you and your buddy in the squad can do it, you are also capable of riding on the top of a dropship and sniping. It's fun, hard as crap, and I give anyone major props if they can prove they've done it like I have. Probably even a 100K ISK. LOL!
Now then, suits to suit.
Long distance is geared more towards light suits, you have a larger distance to cover between safe harbors and their speed makes all the difference in the world. I'd say, profile dampener and range enhancer starting out with a nano hive to keep you stocked. Don't worry if you can't get it right away, just build SP until you can unlock it, that stuff will save your booty one match.
Mid range fighters are probably going to want a logistic or assault suit, even though I still lean heavier towards a Minmitar Light drop suit for mid range sniping. Again, those profile dampeners and a scan precision boost as well as either a Nano Hive or a drop uplink.
Close quarters: the love of my little gaming heart. There really is nothing better than getting right behind that guy who doesn't notice you and shooting him in the back of the head, or side, with an overpowered sniper shot. Yes, even at that range I believe a sniper shot can be OP. However, to make up for that issue, the targets can think for themselves and tend to be hard to hit. Anyway, I recommend a medium suit, or the commando suit. If you go medium, the profile dampener will save your life. Up links are really the way to go here, it helps your team out and they can't complain about that useless sniper if they used your link to get into the match whenever they die. Secondary gun if you run the commando suit should actually be the sniper rifle. My main is an AR and it has saved my life not having to reload the rifle while being shot.
Remember, whatever suit you choose, carry a spare weapon that shoots. Yeah, nova knives are pretty cool and all, but you have to be super fast to be able to run them effectively and that comes with time.
And as always, Aim low first, then aim high. Head shots have an extra damage percentage! |

Standard nanohives suck, I would suggest advanced nanohives(k-2 are good, or go one higher and get repairing hives). If you die a lot then standard are fine, if not go with advanced. |

Advanced are ideal, I suggest those as well but the option had slipped my mind

One hit kills? I rarely kill anyone in one hit even with the prototype rifles and damage mods. Except maybe with headshots. |

LOL, I think I get one hit kills every third or fourth try if they don't take me out first.
Head shots have those modifiers damage wise. It ranges between 175% to 195% but that still requires a very stationary target.
My reason for why that is important later on is that, eventually it kicks into prototype snipers and they get the Charge Rifle which can overpower a shot enough to take down a heavy. But I get a kick out of the Tactical Snipers because in my Commando suit, it takes them three or four shots. There is never a guaranteed one hit KO (outside of fighting games and Pokemon). Keep in mind, also, that I wrote, meant to kill not guaranteed to kill. |

1. Quickscoping doesn't really work the way you think it should just because other games can do it...The scoping mechanics even with Sniper Operation at level 5 is pretty quirky...If you think your gonna drop a Heavy with a NT-511 and then scope into the guy on the roof, your in for a bad surprise....But since I am crazy like that, I understand what you want to do because I will mix things up close. And so the best Sniper Rifle if you want to mix things up close, hands down, will be the Tactical Rifle of any tier because of its quick firing capability...You miss with the NT-511(or any 50 ROF rifle) the reload would feel like an eternity...
2. I am personally beginning to think that the Light suits werent meant for Sniping operations, just because, as the Sniper rifle gets powerfull through skillups...The suit just does not have the tank to stand up to anit-sniping(even body shots are one and done for the Light suits). Speed and Sniping don't really go hand and hand if you scarifice tank...But if you must, Dont waste a module or SP on Profile Dampening, if your planning on being far away, your base signature as a Light suite should be sufficient enough...radar wont pick you up if you plan on being far away...

I wondered if snipers were snarky about anyone using their drop links 'hey, that's for ME so I can get back to sniping easier!". Good to hear atleast one sniper is doing the team a service! |

Every sniper should be thinking about their team with those up-links. My thought on that is, if you can drop more than one and have them stay on the field, drop them in multiple places. The one snipers set for them to get back in the general area they want to work in is extremely useful for other players as well. My teams appreciate having a place they can count on to get in that doesn't get camped.
