This model is just going to kill this game. (For the sake of helping noobs "learn how to play") First we have to want to LIKE the game before we want to LEARN it, and quite frankly, having to endure the SAME enclosed map (with different TERRAIN around it ) for a week or 2 is just going to lose interest.
The model of DUST and everything that goes into it just does not fit an enclosed map...In the 8v8 match you see LAVS on both teams driving around...tankers trying to get in the area...and dropships flying around....This just does NOT fit an 8v8 map. Other FPS can thrive with small maps because there are NO vehicles involved. Yea, I understand It's just the Academy, and when new players get out they will see the entire game. But in a sense, the game is pretty much LOCKED off to new players in Academy, and in order to see the full scope(or in order to UNLOCK), days of CQC/CounterStrike/MW3 must be endured. Then what is the DRAW for playing a game like DUST??
For people who might have heard about DUST and want to see what all the talking/hype is about, for the first thing they play, to be, 8v8 over and over for a few days is just not going to be a BIG DRAW on the community front and also on the business side...The previous version of the Academy where the match play was random gave a better representation, not just on the style of play, where there was a mixture of Ambush and Skirmish, but also, It gave new players eye candy with the different types of maps to roam. An introduction, if you will, of what is to come and the scope of the game.
I really like this game and wish much success upon it, but to me, first impressions count, and to be stagnated for a few days and not be able to see the whole game and all its intricate nature, is just not staying true to the openness of what DUST is...There are no "focused areas" in EVE and we all know how noob friendly EVE is...If DUST is to be synonoymous with EVE the same REPUTATION should be adopted...
I fear this new 8v8 may weaken the model a bit... |

actually it wouldn't even take a few day as far as i know i haven't seen a dev post on a change implemented but the academy ends at 10k wp on average of 500 wp a match means 20 matches and your out of the academy and in the game at 5 mins roughly a match's that an hr of game play straight and your out call it 2 hrs at most now say the match was 15 mins each at 500 wp a match 4 matches an hr for 2k wp an hr would take 5hrs to get done with the academy and you would be in the world with the rest of us
now i do agree as i have stated that running the same map over and over is extremely boring also only being locked to ambush don't give a proper taste of the game i do feel ccp is at least making attempts to make the game better for new players cause they keep trying new things they just aren't listening to the right people cause lets face it take one look at eve and you will see ccp really don't know much on new player friendly games and that's one of there major flaws they need to get out and listen to there community more and get proper feedback and testing cause they people they are listening to really don't know what there talking about and its been taking a large hit on the game and irritating a lot of players
what ccp needs to do is get a group of people together who have never touched eve or touched dust and let them play the game and see what they have to say that is a great starting point for ccp also listening to there player base about things that people had difficulties with right away in game and improve on those areas of the game |

I tried it and it was actually very nice, fast paced, but also sedate and controlled.
I like it though I kind of think they should slowly branch you out into tier game modes before throwing your off of the deep end.

Academy should be listed as option for new player - he/she should be able to join regular game modes. Beside that CCP I would like to see 8v8 Academy Skirmishes. |

That is asking for one a long winded game that can have the potential of being really lob sided....
Lets look at the Teams for example....1 team 8 players, of those 8 player, 3 Snipers in the hills....oh so the other 5 Mercs are going for objective?? 2 mercs per objective hit??

Apparently many at CCP are not smart enough to realize that. |

100 agree with the OP.
IMO >Right off the bat, 6 man squads, leaves 2....to do what? feel left out? >8v8 in todays FPS world doesn't fly, people are here asking for 24v24, 32v32, people want bigger, better fights, not slimmed down garbage. As an introduction to the game, seeing 8 man teams will turn people away. >Ambush Only? Try telling people this is an indepth game, then give them team death match, with no objective >Learning. How to kill is one thing, but they need to know about objectives, holding/taking, thats what system PC runs on. SKIRMISH
IMO Academy should have 2 grades. 1st: Current Academy(pre 1.3) 10,000,WP During this period the learn all 4 game modes; Domination, Skirmish, Ambush and OMS. SP and ISK gains doubled. 2nd: This wouldn't be an academy as such, but a random game mode, for those with under 1.5 million SP, they can also chose to fight in the full game also at this point.
All matches are 16v16. Personally I have never been in an Academy match with less than 30 players |

Brand new Dust player perspective-- downloaded 2 days ago-- do not play EVE -- familiar with universe -- long time fps gamer.
Ill start off by saying I like the universe and like parts of the game but not without some frustrations that make me wonder if I want to 'nut up' and grind so its worth it.
Battle academy-- played a lot in a day and 'graduated' academy with 700k SP....didn't know at time but found out shortly that 700k SP is pretty soft out in the 'real Dust'.
For most part, I actually enjoyed the 8v8 maps with exception of such few maps--however, pending on others in the game firefights were at times very tactical and engaging. Other times is was assault rifle squads patrolling the map. What I hate as a new player is having to go down a tree just to experiment with different weapon and armor (laser rifle plasma cannon heavies etc)
As a dust newb, it would be great to see characters get the chance to respec when they graduate the academy since the academy is not even a real reflection of the main game.
Ill stop there as want to keep the word count low (too late?) but I wish I could go back into the academy until my SP was much higher . |

I like the 8v8 idea. I actually prefer to learn b4 judging rather or not I like the game. This allows for players (new and alts alike) to test out new things in a less chaotic environment. My bro was new to DUST and got out of academy in 2 days. I feel after 10k WP they could've gone back to normal academy until like 20k WP. Many new players, as I've seen, really don't like the idea of being in a "tutorial zone" to begin with as it makes them feel weaker then they are (I try to warn them but they learn the truth when they get out either way) and most players always have something to prove.
*getting back to my original point* I could create an alt right now and spec into Drop ships. Seeing as I can't fly to save my life, this would be an excellent time to train without limiting myself to just the safe zone. This goes for any other vehicle / weapon / equipment / dropsuite.
">Right off the bat, 6 man squads, leaves 2....to do what? feel left out?" Well with 16 vs 16 you have 2 squads with a 3rd incomplete squad. This is academy so do you really expect them to squad up in the first place?
"Lets look at the Teams for example....1 team 8 players, of those 8 player, 3 Snipers in the hills....oh so the other 5 Mercs are going for objective?? 2 mercs per objective hit??"
And when they get to pub matches it will still be the same but with more snipers and MCC campers. It's like they would be getting a taste of how crappy the blueberries are and give them a reason to jump into a corp ASAP.
Oh well that's my 2 ISK on the subject. I appreciate you guys making this thread civil and thank you OP for posting your opinion on the matter. Good luck in your future games guys.
`Sigh. Just another fun game of DUST .

I made a new character today to see what the academy was like. It was quite literally like watching a bunch of toddlers run around with plastic guns. |
