So I got a sony stereo headset and it is friggin great!
I've made a few comments here and there about wanting finely detailed, well textured sounds in DUST. As the game has grown they have improved much of the audio over the near silence the game used to have in it's early stages. So I had become accustomed to DUST over my standard tv speakers which was ok, but now DUST dounds like it has been totally reworked with surround sound in a headset. Truly it sounds totally different in a good way. Now I just want to tell the sound dev how cool some of the action sounds in this game. Laser rifles sear and sizzle the air around you in nice detail, much like I had called for months ago, and that's just one of the many many audio details.
So I just had to post it here for anyone looking to make their game experience better, the stereo headsets are worth it. I got my ps3 ones from amazon for $75 and they work on the PC too.
On a related note, since I have just begun to consider actually verbally communicating with people in this game does PTT work? It seems like it's a dead feature. |

TL;DR
sound works, film at eleven.
Snarky jokes aside, PTT does work. It does not function when buttons are disabled during loading screens and inside menus for instance as the button has another function.
Some don't like to have others listen to their breathing or to share the sounds of a new puppy enjoying barfing dinner up on the carpet. Others should use it as I would use 'mute all' less often to keep the rambling, swearing, misogynistic, racist, horrible taste in music and just plain stupid comments from interfering with the enjoyment of the game.
Edit: Oops. Sorry, my full surround stereo system makes it pretty sweet as well. I switched to a 7.1 headset and while it is not as nice as a full stereo system it works very well and allows has a mic with a separate volume.
Note that the Sony Wireless Headset has caused problems with the DS3 controller in the past. I have no recollection if those problems have been solved. Thus it is not a solution I would normally recommend, as it caused the DS3 to reset often.
Your mileage will vary. |

I know where you are coming from, I have sworn off using a mic on console shooters for years. I can enjoy my game just fine without hearing the worst of child kind and all of their irritating volume |

I used to get my dog to growl menacingly down my mic in between matches on black ops 1, whilst saying things like "dogs! coming right at us!" in my best Keifer Sutherland voice. Juvenile? yes. Annoying? hell yes. Funny? for me, yes.
I don't do it in New Eden though. That would be stupid and irrelevant. |

If you want the sound and a mic then I suggest the Turtle Beach P-11 headset. For $65 at Walmart and no need to charge it (USB and 1/8" headset jack) and a switch to turn off your mic and two volume control knobs, one for game sound/music sound and one for chat volume you are guaranteed to have a good audio experience with none of the headaches that a wireless device with a history of interfering with your controller can bring. |
