Welcome to my guide on how Scanning works, this is the feature that makes enemies show up on your mini map without you seeing them.
Sure, enemies show up when you aim at them but what if you could see them sneaking up on you? That is worth a lot and will save you a lot of unnecessary deaths.
Scanning is a very binary system, either they show up or they don't, there is no in between where they show up a little here and there. Scanning is also shared between team members so if you have a friend they sees a enemy so will you.
All suits have a 10m scan radius, within this it is possible to see all enemies but only if your suit scanner is good enough. Every suit has a Scan Precision and a Scan Profile value and you will only be able to see enemies that has a equal or higher profile than your precision.
Lets take a look at what values the suit have before skills:
Suit name - Profile/Precision Light Basic - 45/45 Light Scout - 45/45 Medium Basic - 50/55 Medium Assault - 50/55 Medium Logistics - 50/50 Heavy Basic - 65/60 Heavy Sentinel - 65/60 Heavy Commando - 65/60
This means that Light suits can see everyone, medium suit can see heavies and heavies can see other heavies. Logistics are the only role specific suit with different values, they can see all medium suits as well.
But these values can also be affected by 3 Dropsuit Upgrades skills: Precision Enhancement - +2% Scan Precision Profile Dampening - -2% Scan Profile Range Amplification - +10% Scan Range (1m per skill level)
This means that it is possible for a Medium basic or Assault suit with perfect skills to spot other medium suits unless they have Dampening 2 or more. A Logi or Light suit will have to have equal or higher Precision skill than enemy Dampening skill to see other same sized suits.
How does this affect me? You probably want to put some points into Profile Dampening skill if you're not playing a Heavy because that means you will be spotted (and killed) less.
If you play Logi or Light suit you will want to have some points into Precision Enhancement because you will spot more enemies and be able to avoid getting killed or turn around to kill them first.
There are also the modules that affect these values and they are all really strong so they scew the values way off and are always a good choice for the right suit. Maybe a dampener on that medium suit to hide from logi? Maybe a precision enhancer to spot other medium suits? Maybe a range amplifier on that logi suit to utilize its low Precision value? |

This is all on the assumption that it works this way, CCP haven't said anything official (as far as i know) but from my experience this works.
Some claim that the system is broken but I really haven't seen any proof of that, I think they just don't understand it. |

On precision - what does increasing the precision ability actually do?
Does that 2% actually help and should a light suit even invest as they are few light suits around anyway.
The thing is that on a suit with 50/50 or 45/45 the dampening and precision skills have the same 2% effect so if the enemy has more dampening skill then you have precision then you will not be able to see him. This makes the precision extremely useful for logis and for scouts it totally depends on how many other scouts you encounter.

Dont even bother, your eyes work better so check your corners and pay attention to the sounds on the battlefield
The thing is that the scanner sees things behind you and for a longer range then you can hear. Imo it is very useful for the right suit.

Also have a good scanner value so you don't get shot in the back without seeing them first ;)

Yes, all scanner info is shared across team. This is why you sometimes get red chevrons that are on the other side of the map. |
