and it's not pretty. Two shots and I'm dead. I'm saving up for an advanced suit and shields, but I'm 200,000 SP short. What can I do in the meantime? |

Adapt and overcome. This should be a perfect time to learn about defense. How to know when to get into cover. How to fire from behind objects instead of running and firing within an open field. Squad up with people and follow them, if possible. If you retain all that you should have learned from this time period (post graduation war wounds), you should be a monster by the time you get to advanced suits.
It's a tough up hill battle but well worth it for the mercenary you can become. |

It replies,

in dust you will die a lot regardless of sp investment and fit... its just part of the game but heres a few tips for you
1. don't chase kills... usually you are just chasing your own death
2. try to squad up and stick with them...if your in a small unactive corp join a larger one... D uni is great for new players and squads are forming around the clock +all are welcome
3.reload often ... don't get caught in a fire fight almost empty
4. flank your opponent ... if you see an enemy going toe to toe with a team member try to get behind them for the kill...remaining unseen or taking advantage of a distracted opponent is key to kills and staying alive
5.asses a situation before running in guns blazing...this doesn't mean hide it means play smart... how many of the enemy are there, what are their fits, have they seen you, are they distracted,... this type of thing
6.use cover... but don't sit there to long
7.in skirmish or domination, make sure the area is clear before you hack, and check for remote explosives!
hope this helps and good luck! |

Until you work up the SP to get better suits/equipment, your greatest advantage will be teamwork.
Don't expect lone wolfing to work, particularly for a new graduate.
Squad up with better players, and stay tight in formation. As soon as you start to take damage, find cover. |

Stick to the free Assault - Medic suit in the meantime and save your ISK. That is the best free suit you get to start with until you gain more SP. Good luck. I ended up getting extremely frustrated and quitting for 2 months before coming back to 2.5 million SP to invest. |

Always stay close to other blues. This is your primary life insurance.
Having blues around you means:
- Enemies will not single you out quite as often, giving your more breathing space.
- Blues are better than any scanner equipment could possibly be. Watch where they are shooting and where they get shot from and it will tell you everything you need to know. Not to mention that reds they spot appear on your radar.
- Chances are much higher to catch a distracted or injured red. This will be your primary source of kills, only fools look for an even duel. :) The weaker your suit, the more critical this becomes.
Don't "bunch up" though, as this will leave you vulnerable to explosives and other weapons of mass destruction. And always be aware of your surroundings, stay out of sniper lanes, stick to high ground if possible, prefer areas with good cover and get to know the flanking options, etc.
When flanking, don't be overzealous. Don't try to go all the way around the map and take on a blob of red on your own, that will only get you killed and waste time.
Also always be prepared to make a quick exit. When reds are overrunning your position, don't play the hero. It's better to retreat and regroup.
Never be the first to pass a coke-point or approach a contested objective. This may sound cowardly, but there is no point in sacrificing yourself while you are not able to tank any damage. You will be much more useful supporting the attack from the second row or by flanking.
Don't bother fighting at a distance (unless you are a sniper or other long-range expert of course). The AR for instance has a pretty impressive range, but shooting enemies at range is pretty pointless. You will only warn them of your presence, attract enemy attention, and the target will be able to get into cover and heal before you even get close to a kill. Use ranged fire only for strategic purposes (suppressing an enemy assault, supporting a friendly assault, or covering a retreat / relocation). In all other situations, try to get into a better position or patiently wait for your chance to strike.
Don't believe anybody who tells you that new players cannot compete due to SP disadvantage. It's not true, but if you believe it, you will make it happen.
However, due to a variety of factors (lack of matchmaking, proto-squads, AFK, red-lining), you can easily find yourself in a battle that isn't worth participating in. Nobody can force you to. With some experience you will be able to tell when this is likely to occur by reading the names on the roster before committing to a battle. You can always leave a battle (press L1) before you get stuck with 15 minutes of thumb-twiddling. |

Everything said above, especially by Duck Drahko, is completely right and excellent advice. I'd like to add in a link to a fit I feel is the fresh Academy graduate's best defense against the veteran players rolling around with 600 shields. tl;dr: get flux grenades and a mass driver, cook the flux, spam the MD, get kills. All the teamplay advice above still applies. https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=96747 |

Don't be to cool to suit up in the starter gear. The free stuff. Sometimes the match up will be ridiculously one sided. A complete massacre by one team. Teams quit pretty quickly lately. By that, I mean they just give up. And you cannot win alone.
If you stay in the match you're just throwing your gear away. Wear the free stuff if you want to stay and fight, and save your gear for a better match up. don't rush to get back if the fight. You'll only be feeding the other side kills.

Aside from the situational awareness things everyone has pointed out previously, I urge you to look at these matches less at your KDR, or W/L and more at your ISK gained/lost. As long as you're making money you're not really losing. Though getting stomped on does suck.
til then, team work team work. |
