OK, sorry... I know you were expecting a QQ /ragequit story from the title. You will not be drinking any noob tears tonight though. THIS STORY HAS A HAPPY ENDING (for now).
I am generally a new DUST player. I have experimented with different setups, weapons, and play-styles. This past Friday I created a new character with the intention of "learning" how to snipe. Here are a few quick notes regarding setup. After about a day of playing, I fit the following setup:
- Dragonfly [NSV] - 2x Basic Profile Damps - 1x Light Damage Mod - NT511 Sniper Rifle - SMG (So pretty basic and unremarkable, except for the Dragonfly which I did pay some AUR for)
This setup worked VERY well for me, and even though this character is only 4 days old, I've racked up 143 Kills, with only 14 deaths . Don't believe me? Look me up on the leaderboards, I believe when I logged off last night my KDR was 10.21 (Yes yes it's easy for noobs to make it because they just haven't had that many chances to get utterly destroyed yet ).
So I basically stuck to these 3 simple guidelines:
1) Don't snipe from obvious places. A prime example are buildings in the middle of the map with ladders, etc (AVOID THESE). Find yourself a nice place on the map's edges, preferably a hill, with your back facing the red line. The shots are longer...but hey remember, you're a SNIPER that's what you're supposed to do, headshots are still very doable. Trust me... sniper rifles have a rather obscene reach in this game.
Even better alternative... have a buddy in a dropship ferry you to buildings and places inaccessible by foot.
2) Try not to stay in one place for too long. People will eventually know what you're up to, especially if they've seen 2 of their team members spontaneously hit the ground nearby. This one time, the other team got so fed up with me, that the next thing I know, I have a tank, 2 LAV's, and tons of infantry trying to climb the hill to take me out.
3) Pick your targets - obviously guys standing still, dudes manning turrets on the back of stationary LAV's are also very vulnerable. Obviously guys hacking objectives turrets, etc will also easily fall prey to your long stealthy reach. See a heavy climbing the hill trying to get you? Don't pull out the SMG, try and try and outflank him, just leave.... and find another nest to shoot from.
I'm sure some of these ideas will stop working once I get out of the academy queue, but I had a fun weekend I do feel that the mechanics are slightly tilted in favor of snipers, mainly that the huge maps gives stealthy scout builds a lot of places to hide. I will also concede that this is not a particularly useful role for winning battles. Yes, you can get 6 to 10 kills without dying, but that's a drop in the bucket in terms of overall warpoints accumulated in a game. |

I run something similar and find that overwatch (target suppression, covering fire, counter-sniping etc) is only a secondary objective for me. Primarily I tend to perform a more supportive role by identifying targets, tracking enemy movement and calling out HAV/LAV drops for the rest of my squad. Taking out that enemy proto-sniper camped up their MCC is just an added bonus for me. |

First off let me congratulate you dude, for being part of the best NPC corp around.
My favorite way of using the Sniper rifle is to use it as a Musket! That's right bro, get at AR range and let the shots whiz. Heavies be like, "Dude!", then they get their buzz harshed.
Being a musketeer is not for noobs, but it is fun and brings in the loot if you do it right. |

If your character is only 4 days old, your prolly still going up agaist militia suits, enjoy racking up the K/D...Your 2 low slots will be a waste of slots when the competition gets better (If your not tryna get close, no need for damps as a sniper)... |

That's cool, but you're going to find that life gets much harder outside the academy. Heavies and proto logis will take you 2-3 headshots or 5-7 body shots to kill, not like the academy where you're basically guaranteed OHK headshots or 2-shot body kills. The best way to deal with this is derpshipping yourself with a logi kit (uplink, hive, more hive) up to the top of a building, where you can get enough time on target consistently kill people before they can get to cover, where they regenerate their 600+ shield HP. |

Yep, once proto suits enter into the equation it's harder to one shot.
I start at the redline just as with a tank and seek opportunities to move forward as my team moves forward. A successful team allows for better sniping positions closer in and toward the enemy redline.
The same rules apply here as they do for snipers in RL. There are some good books on the subject. The sniper guides presented on these forums are pretty much the basic techniques of sniping. |

I would add one caveat to your guideline number 1:
-If your team has a secure hold on the center of the map and the opposing team hasn't gone full redline sniper mode yet then the tops of these buildings are permissible.
But it seems that you have a good basic grasp on sniping. One thing I would encourage you to do is to take risks with your positioning. Sometimes a less than optimal spot can be a honey hole because no one will look there. Especially if it is in the sameddirection as a popular spot. |

If you join a battle, skirmish or domination, at the start of the match then it can be useful to move over to the enemy's redline which allows you to counter snipe as well as take out people who have just spawned into their "safe" zone especially if they just stand there waiting for their vehicle to turn up. |

Tristan, you seem to have mastered the basics of Scout Sniper, which are a bit different than sniping in a suit with more tank. These methods will still work once you get out of the Academe, but you will find that experienced players are not so considerate as to stand still for you like a lot of the noobs in the Academe will.
As for benefiting your team:
Look for spots where you can defend objectives, particularly spots where you can see the terminal. Move to these spots when your team first captures an objective and take out Reds who come to take it back.
Aside from that, take out other snipers (then move before they respawn), and support infantry movements by taking out or damaging their opposition.
You are on the right path though. |

First off, you seem to have a good grasp on being a sniper. However as mentioned above by someone, I recommend using a logistics suit to snipe, carry 1 drop uplink (DU) at least one nano hive (NH) and the third option is up to you. I run an advanced or proto amarr logi using this equipment and a charge sniper rifle. I recommend finding a nice elevated point towards the middle of the map where you can get a good view of both ends of the map whilst keeping in mind how easy it would be to sneak up on you. NOTE: some maps have ideal sniping spots closer to your MCC, so don't go running off to the middle of the map to snipe if a simple hill close to ur MCC will suffice. Also Try using a cheap militia dropship to get to sniping posts faster (such as the top of tall buildings or remote locations). |

KD does not matter, nothing does, if anything does its just making sure you have a nice beefy wallet, that said just use the starter sniper fit, maybe change out rifle for tactical rifle, its like 10k fit youll go easily 15-0, and pick up a mouse and keyboard |

In an Instant Match, you won't get many stationary targets. A rather interesting thing I have found while sniping is: "Always look beside you." As the passive scanner is dead and you - along with many others - are also packing dampeners, they could very well be sniping right beside you. Been there, done that, kill them. Also, start learning to lead your head shots. Now that's is one useful skill. |

You do not understand what "sniping is unfair" means until you your 550 HP suit gets one-shotted from BODY SHOTS by a guy using an officer sniper rifle and 4+ complex damage mods. You do not understand until you also realize that the guy has a view of the hacking console of the null cannon closest to your team's redline, while he himself is in his own team's redline. You do not understand until he's gone 18-0 in five minutes, having denied the "gimmie" capture point from your team, and you are unable to capture said null cannon until you block is LOS with a LAV. |

4. Line up with the hackable side of an outside objective that also has perspective over the main entry/exit point to the central objective(s). Remove solo hack scouts. Allow squads to hack, for the rehack and survivability.
5. If sniping from outer areas, relay enemy positions to your squad/team (if you mic). If you have a pair, and snipe from the frontline, carry an Active Scanner and relay targets to your entire team since you're likely to have access to depots and teammates' nanos and won't need that equipment slot. |

Once I went for a co-op hack - was wondering why the hack option was not coming up...can you guess the rest...oh the shame! Killed them though...no witnesses! I'm not saying that the Thale's doesn't wreck shop, but why would you need more than 3 damage mods? The fourth only adds like 10 damage and a fifth is even less. Also why would you let the guy get 18 kills before you flank him and put a scrambler pistol to the back of his head?
In this case it isn't the sniping that tips the balance, but rather the weapon. So it's officer weapons that are unfair. |

Reality is going to hit you hard upon leaving the academy and I am so sorry, because I was there with this character. I rolled out as a sniper in a near identical fitting to the one you described, save that I had a Scrambler pistol as my sidearm. The academy was glorious, with 22/1 being my best KDR during those halcyon days.
Now, I am in the mercenary fray of New Eden and I tell you that dropping reds left and right is a thing of the past. Until I invested in my Sniper Rifle to a decent degree even Assaults took three hits to down, and don't get me started on heavies. I'd be camping objectives and just wounding reds 'til my team mates could come and finish them off, many assists, few kills. Of course, the reds never want to stand still long enough to hack the objective with me peppering them, so I get to keep the letter in blue hands.
Rest assured, fellow sniper, things will get better. You'll get your proficiency up and access some better rifles and then reds will drop again. Sticking to inaccessible roofs is a good strategy, especially if you can drop an up-link, keep mobile and always support your team. Camp objectives and enemy assets, use your mobility to hack when an objective or asset is clear, and take them unaware. Flanking from a distance is great, and keep your eye out for red snipers. You'll get fewer kills playing this way then you would exclusively hunting reds for kills, but you'll be an asset to your team.
Also, consider making an alt fitting in an assault suit with more EHP, for those times when you need to get closer to take shots. Sometimes the last objective is surrounded by structures and you need to get close to shoot, an assault suit will mean you can book it if you're hit. I don't know about you, but one hit downs me in that Dragonfly.
