What is all this about a carbon engine? Seems to me it would be easier to port to unreal 4? Besides, isn't unreal 4 better? |

My biggest concern is....how does a big ass company go ahead and build a game without even knowing that the system they want to put it on can't even handle it?

Say hello to the world of contractually defined exclusivity contracts. The PS4 date is set, and the contract says its a secret. |

They used the carbon engine on EVE right? So why doesnt it work with Dust 514?
Thats the part that makes no sense to me yet. I understand the whole melting of graphics card thing but I guess Dust is just far more demanding than EVE will ever be. |

Take a look at Dust 514. Now take a look at The Last of Us and God of War 3. Now realize that Dust could still look a lot better even with the dated hardware of a PS3. |

The old space thingy is called Trinity. It has been integrated into what is called the CARBON framework but it is it's own engine really.
The only part of EVE that uses what we refer to as Carbon (technically it's called "Ambulation Technology") is barbies in spa- ehem... the doo- *cough...monocl-........that Walking In Stations thing. |

Carbon was built for eve right? So it doesn't come with all those things that shooters need. Like aiming, hit detection physics ect. While carbon does do a nice job at realtime rendering of 3D assets in space. All of that otherstuff would need to be coded from the ground up. From some early videos it did look like they did do alot of work with it. UDK comes with alot of that stuff right out of the box.
They used it at the school I went to, students were able to put together crude fps games in a few months. |

I mean it was melting the highest end computer (normal ranged, not extreme rigs) when it was first put out back in the day and that was only 1 room and 1 character. This was in part due to bad optimization and a missing frame limiter. It made hardware constantly run on full speed (akin to synthetic benchmarks) while most modern hardware is not built for this so it quite litteraly melted.
Details can be toned down, shaders rewritten, textures compressed.I think the larger issue is wether the benefits outweight the cost and time of development.

It seems to me that they are having enough trouble with the Unreal 3 engine, and that is made to be easy to develop with. Do you really think they would be having a better time with an engine that this team created? No offense to them, but I seriously doubt the Carbon Engine was anywhere near complete. |
