1. Prioritize Resistance Modules, both active and passive. Afterburner SHOULD ALWAYS BE PART OF THE FIT.
2. Don't use the forward gun on the ADS. Always bring a gunner. Mouse and Keyboard preferred. Blasters v. Infantry, Turret installations, Rocket v. Tanks. This allows you to keep awareness of your surroundings, allowing your teammate to focus on the killing.
3. You don't have to stay high. If the heat from the AV gets to hot, recall your dropship, and bring in a tank or fill another role for the time being. AV shouldn't be penalized for countering you effectively. You just have to throw something different at them.
Remember to be flexible, survival mods are essential, and mobility is a lifesaver.
Caldari Dropships counter Gallente Dropships while Gallente Dropships tend to fare better against ground targets due to forge gun bonus damage to shields and how swarms can be outran by both Caldari and Gallente models.
There's my two sense from someone who has stuck with the role and has found out how to be effective.
You fill these roles:
1) Quick Transport - You can quickly drop a small squad at point or upon a tactically powerful location. This can make or break games.
2) Ground Harassment- With the right approach, you can devastate an enemy ground push. Be aware of the relative power of the enemy AV and remind your gunner of target priority list (Forge Gunners first, then Swarmers, then everyone else). Beware those throwing AV grenades at you and avoid flaylocks trying to throw you off course.
3) Aerial Recon- Communication of intel through aerial spotting is quite useful in understanding the ebb and flow of the match. Regularly updating your squad or FC of this can lead your group to victory.
Is it a perfect role? No. Is it worth it? Yes.
My two cents on it. |

* AV grenades you can stay above.
* Swarms you can outrun.
* Tanks you can hover directly above and pummel-- unless there are two of them, in which case you need to try to catch them alone.
* Turrets must die early.
* Forge gunners are a major threat and a serious problem, but they're slow-- sometimes stationary. Get clear and get your squad to hit them for you.
* Hostile dropships are just plain fun.
* You will get shot down regardless; it's just a matter of how often and at what cost.
Remember: (1) if they're optimizing to take you out, they're not optimizing to take on your infantry support; (2) If they're optimized to take out your infantry support, you have an opportunity to make yourself a serious nuisance until they pull out the heavy AV. When that happens, see point (1).
Actual pilots, feel free to shoot me down.
Halador gets it! Good to know that some folks know how to fly.
