Cover can be improved, yes, but if players knew how the scanner worked, what cover we have currently would be used much more effectively if we knew when enemies can or cannot see us on their TACNET.
I've seen the scanner explained somewhere so ill try and break it down as best I can remember. Anyone can feel free to correct me.
The scanner consists of three values: range, precision, and profile. Your range is pretty simple and I'm sure you don't need an explanation for that. The other two values, precision and profile, are what determine when something will show up. CCP has stated that these values are constant and are not affected by sprinting, shooting, hacking, etc.
Both these values are measured in decibels (dB) signifying that your profile emits "noise" which is picked up by other dropsuits. Your dropsuit profile is the amount of noise a suit emits (e.g. Assault suits have a profile of 50 dB). Your precision on the other hand is the value which a suit can "hear" (e.g. Assault suits have a precision of 55 dB). In the case of Assaults, this means that two Assaults at the same level of skills would not pick each other up. Suits like heavies have higher profiles as well as higher precision values, meaning they make more "noise" and can "hear" less.
The ultimate goal is to lower both your profile and precision, as well as extend your range. The dropsuit scanning skills allow a 10% reduction to both profile and precision at level 5. In the case of the Assault suit, the precision value would be modified from 55 dB to 49.5 dB at Precision Enhancement V, meaning that someone with maxed out precision could pick up other Assault suits who don't have any skills in Profile Dampening. Similarly, at level V profile dampening, an Assault suits profile would lower from 50 dB to 45 dB.
The dropsuit scanning values from best to worst go as follows: Scout > Logi > Assault > Heavy. So effectively if you max your scanning skills you will be put on a competitive edge against people who don't have any scanning skills, but as soon as people invest in them scanning is essentially back to where it was originally unless you invest in dampening or precision modules. |
