Being an armor tanker, my biggest threats are the Mass Driver, Flaylock and Contact Grenades.
So this may come as a surprise when I say that I actually think the Mass Driver is very well balanced for its role and does its job very well. Allow me to explain.
1.) Being on the receiving end hurts.
This is expected though as Im an armor tanker. Shields disappear pretty quick and the armor just peels off afterward, so I learned very early on in 1.2 to do the logical thing - tactical retreat. I understand that this weapon serves dual roles and one of those roles is making armor tankers think twice. Ive increased my survivability dramatically just by knowing my limitations and not trying something stupid.
2.) Using it requires quite a bit of skill.
I actually have a high degree of respect for people that use it. Might not look like it itwhen those rounds are flying at you but this damned thing requires a great amount of getting used to. I tried it, thinking itd be like it were when it were first released. Imagine my surprise when the reticle was changed - but thats neither here nor there. The reticle is provided as a guide for a flat plane withthe bottom line setling around the 40/45m mark.
But, Dust isnt a perfect world and there are lots of hills/crags. Adjusting for this is a hard thing to become accustomed to and while a healthy 4/5m splash radius is forgiving, an uphill battle is practically a death sentence. Long shots are hard to time when you account for the fact that its nigh impossible to accurately predict how fast your target is moving. Sure, that heavy looks like an easy target 60m away, but if hes doing something crazy like wearing kinetic catalyzers you can kiss trajectory analysis goodbye.
3.) Ammunition is rough.
With three 'magazines' you better make damn sure you hit. 80-100 Splash damage is great but considering that your average proto suit is carrying at least 400EHP, 18 rounds suddenly sounds too little to deal with large scale combat. One on one you have a good chance but against a group youre inevitably going to haveto rely on friendlies to account for your mistakes.
To top it off the reload time is excruciating in the heat of battle.
So, there it is. id imagine that theres a lot who disagree but honestly this weapon does exactly what it claims to do: Area Denial. So, start up the flame war as Imust be insane but theres a lot of 'nerf the mass driver' threads and I figured they could use a bit of rational compliment.

Agree 100% perfectly balanced. As a heavy, MDs can frustrate the hell out of me especially in the hands of a skilled user. Also have to say that I created an alt and used the basic MD with a basic Gallente medium. Constantly in the heat of battle and was possibly the most fun I have had playing Dust (17/12/3). Awesome stuff |

Kind of agree. If the weapon would do damage to the user as well as own grenades do, then sure all fine. Using wrong weapon against MD at short-mid range own fault. Already had it more than once Dogfight against MD forget it! It feels like they don't even have to aim. Just face the ground and shoot. No chance, if not every freaking bullet hits the target by 110%
This weapons makes me currently fear most as Logibro and Assault |

If youre that close you need to sprint past them and use their turn radius to your advantage while you book it to heavy cover (large object that has no open sides, much like the outer wall of a building - as opposed to a crate). |

It will damage yourself if you shoot too close to where you are standing, or if you shoot a little late as you dive for cover, clipping your cover, or if someone walks in front of you...
I have killed myself numerous times with them, it's frustrating, but sometimes funny.
Aiming with the MD is wierd, because in some situations its easy, in some situations its a nightmare. For example, shooting a target that is below me, thats easy. Level ground, average difficulty. Uphill... more luck than skill.
So two small tactics that shift things rapidly in your favor is to take the high ground, and force them to turn rapidly near objects. |

I wasn't being sarcastic. It is balanced very well and definitely does not need a nerf. |
