If you can say. I know the PS3 doesn't have the best hardware, especially its RAM that's divided up. However it does have SPUs, and when you use those, you get games like The Last of Us, or Uncharted. I believe, in Uncharted 2, physics was done on 1 SPU and other stuff on others.
Do you use SPUs, and if you don't, why haven't you? It seems like it could help with the game. |

CCP is new to the Ps3, hardware. So they are limited. Naughty Dog, had more time on the Ps3 and I wouldn't be surprised that Sony helped them out with the hardware. The devs will have a hard time with the Ps3, if they are new to it. Why do you think when I Ps3 first came out, the games were not as great as it is now. Some companies are even porting Xbox 360 games onto the Ps3. That is why not too many third party games look amazing as ND or other Sony own studios. |

most people don't get that CCP is slowly developing this game over the next 5 years and theyre in no hurry....
its just a skeleton right now and they are just fine with that... to get an idea of how CCP develop games go look at what eve looked like and played like in 2003 and what it looks like and plays like now...
and realize that took 10 years to do
eve and dust will eventually become new eden the devs have said as much... so the tech available now to make the game "pretty" doesn't really help them achieve theyre end game.... only ours....
that's something they just don't give a crap about ... they really don't care if we stay or go cause in the end the product they will have created will not resemble this at all and the following it produces will not be most of us....
they know this.... that's why we are all disappointed and they don't seem to care....
because for them this is one big test
and we are the rats. |

I agree with this part. It requires judging the situation objectively and understanding the grand scale of what they envisioned for Dust/EVE

With the rates I've seen other games develop CCP is going to be hard pressed if the think console users can wait 5 years to get a semi-complete game.
Smaller companies with a lot less income out there are developing circles around CCP... |

The Unreal engine has never been very strong on PS3, but that's an issue that's going to go away when the game eventually moves to PS4 with its PC-like architecture.
The Last of Us is using a custom built engine that was built by in an in-house studio at Sony specially for the PS3, so that's a very different story.
It's not a simple matter of "using the SPU", even in-house at Sony it took them many years to get the best performance out of it. It would be unreasonable to expect CCP to invest the gargantuan amount necessary to overhaul the Unreal engine, especially this late in the PS3s lifecycle. |

Bioshock, Batman Arkham series, for example, run fine. Even DICE uses the SPUs on their Frostbite Engine.
Too bad CCP didn't make a custom engine for Dust. I know they tried with Carbon, but I meant after that, unless it would have taken too much time/money. |

The Ps3 has A LOT of bottlenecks which limit the ps3's processing power. Most devs that have been continuously developing on the ps3 have created tricks to achieve much more processing power. Thankfully the ps4 is heard to have very few bottlenecks. |

Yes it does. If CCP really intends to stay with the PS3 for 5 years though, I'm sure they'll find their own tricks. |

It tells a lot about SONY and their thought process. I know I am just another fanboy evetard but I do try to step back and look at why progress is difficult. Actually hearing it said by someone who has been there and is there now helps drive home the fact that the PS3 isn't easy. I was trained by SONY to fix their LCD TVs and they do things differently. SONY TVs that are sold at bottom tier stores like Kmart and Walmart actually have better electronics in them than the higher tier like from HHgreg. The higher tier store TVs have a few more parts that are slower. They do this to make all the TVs look the same even though they are technically different. I also heard a PS3 developer say that they made the PS3 difficult to use so it would have a long life because it would take seven years to master the architecture and code. CCP and SONY are perfect bed fellows because they both play by their own rules. |
