tl;dr; I probably suck as a FPS games when not using a mouse. I'd love any advice you could give to help improve my game.
I've been playing Dust 514 steadily on this character for a couple months now. While I have improved, my skills as a player are in great need of improvement. When I play my total kills per match range from 3-7, tending to be more toward the 3-5 area. My K/D ratio per match typically falls in the range of .50 - 1.0. A good match for me puts my K/D ratio at 1. My war points per match typically falls in the 300-500 range.
I've played FPS games in the past. They have all been on the PC though, and I've always played with a mouse and not a controller. I played the Battle Field games starting with BF 1942. My K/D ratio per match on those games would fall between 1.0 - 5.0, and almost always 2.0 or above.
So I'm coming here in search of advice//tips to either increase my K/D ratio, my total kills per match or at the very least my total WP per match. I'll be honest and say that I'd actually just be happy with just getting a higher amount of WP. Even if that means not working to get kills but be more of a support role.
This is the drop suit fitting I use about 90% of the time.

Assault Rifle Operation - 5 Assault Rifle Proficiency - 3 Assault Rifle Sharpshooter - 3
A very frustrating issue for me is that I tend to die very quickly when I come face to face with other players. I avoid head to head fights with heavies. I also try to stay close to other players and not run off by myself.
I'd love any advice/tips anyone is willing to give me. I admit that I may just not be a very FPS player with a controller, but anything you can offer that you think might improve my game will be gladly welcomed |

It seems you are doing things correctly. Although you may want to switch out those Armor Plates for a Shield Regulator and a Cardiac Stimulants. As a Caldari, the C/1 suits are designed to be shield tankers. Generally this will mean more high slots.
The first thing you want to do is find a corp and run with a squad. This will improve your survivability a lot, if you stay with your squad.
You want to make sure you're backing out of combat when you're damaged to let your shields recharge. A shield energizer might help with that. If your survivability goes up after that, you can try and see about changing an extender for a damage mod.
Since Dust isn't a twitch shooter, your tactics and your play style will matter more than how well you can shoot, though being good at that will help.
Again run with a squad at all times, if possible. Alone, you are easy pickings, but as a squad, you chances improve exponentially.
Hope this helps. |

Basically as a shield tanker never go toe to toe with anyone in a fair match up, try to skirmish from unexpected angles..... |

As a shield tanker I would swap the armour plates for 1 reactive palate (its always good to have some sort of passive armour rep ) and put 1 shield regulator . (The faster your shields recharge the better. |

Hey I posted these tips on another thread and a few Vets added, hope these help:
1. Try to run with a squad as this will increase the probability of them calling out enemies and Orbitals 2. If you do solo, scout it out and infiltrate or catch stragglers by surprise you could also snipe or hold down a position .DO not try running for objectives if your a one man team or you might just be a lead punching bag or an item on the Road Kill menu. 3. USE cover even if you think your Tactical Duvall is the end all to all opposers, chances are there is some one not in your sight gunning for you. 4. Its OK to run away. 5. Practice and use your sidearm. 6 Practice and use grenades 7. Watch for chokes points, this means that you don't run in the same corridors, hallways, areas where the last 7 or 8 blues just died because the enemy is choking you guys through the sam openings. 8. Have short term goals for example=10 kills with less than 6 deaths when you reach this, just back off and support, or hold down an area. 9.There is no such thing as Rambo..wait you might not get that reference..hmm ,you aren't going kill everyone the first 5 minutes of a game, let them come to you.
Just a few to help ya out Rookie
Just a humble Merc here Vets so feel free to pass on any useful advice for the new clone behind you.

If you are used to playing FPS games on a PC, try using a mouse and keyboard with your PS3. M/KB users generally have the advantage over the dualshock uses considering everything else is the same. |

what he said, alhough dont think the the game is glitched if your pointer suddenly goes off target. CCP added handicaps to the keyboard and mouse to try and balance them against dualshock users. apart from that they are generally the better option if you are used to the keyboard and mouse. Some people that have been playing for years on the playstation consoles can destroy anythig equally as good with the contrller, so it's eally up to what you are more confortable with. |

Learning when to run away is key. Especially with so many mercs with weaponry that would just eat through your dropsuit. I just wanted to stress that.
Understand flanking as well. Flanking is key. I would suggest upping your grenade power so that when you do flank, you're cooking a grenada for lunch. Serve it to them, and then mop them up. Move out of position immediately. Enemies will focus fire in your direction, while your team should punch forward, acting as a cover for you. Come around the corner, clean the rest coming to help who don't know what the heck is going on but they just following the sounds of gunfire.
High grounds, low grounds. Know of them. Crouch for a more sustained aim. Open fields? Nay sir, avoid em
But people pretty much covered everything already.
Oh and another thing, chasing kills could turn into chasing death. Don't chase kills unless you're sure that the enemy is not running towards his teammates. |

Also, since your'e worried about your skills on the DS3 I would try to make the smaller aiming adjustments with the left stick as opposed to the right. Sometimes moving 2 steps to the right w left stick makes a quicker and more accurate adjustment if you're having trouble putting your sights on people.
I have a pretty erratic right thumb lol the first few games I can't miss, others I couldn't hit the fattest heavy on the field. It's almost like you lose control over time with the DS3 as you loosen up. Make sure your sensitivity isn't off the charts either, I know some people prefer 50 and 60 but a good 30 or 40 never hurt anybody.
EDIT: Look into your Shield upgrade, extension and regulation skills too. If your fitting skills are up to snuff you should be able to fit 2 or 3 complex extenders and enhanced regulators or energizers. I gave up the armor plates for regulators and the speed increase/regen increase is nice and you'll be sort of forced into hit-and-run tactics, but that's not necessarily a bad thing either. |

+1.
Coming from a PC myself, I find the DS3 practically unusable for FPS games like Dust. Why fight it? Do like I did and use the keyboard/mouse controls.
The other thing I would look for is lag in your system. Either in the network (are you using wireless, have you configured your router for static routes), in your PS3 (have you defragged recently, or have you considered a SSD), or in your display (do you have an upsampling preamplifier or have you turned on "game mode" on your TV).
I had issues with all of the above (and the resulting 0.5 KDR to prove it), and but since solving them things are on a much more promising trajectory.
Hope this helps & good luck....Lead |
