Normal human lays down...brain dissected but copied digitally in the process.
Copy is downloaded into cyborg clone brain.
You can get all this info simply by watching dust trailers.
yes i suppose they can have babies. Clone bodies should be pretty much functional....of course if you die with a fetus growing inside of you the baby would not make it. it doesn't get transferred when your brain/DNA is transferred to a new clone.
Also the baby would be born human not immortal...they would have to go through process as well to become immortal. I imagine they would first have to grow up. |

You might want to read "Templar One" by Tony Gonzales, it's the story about the first immortal clone. The characters in the book meet up in the book before that though (The Empyrian Age) but that adresses mostly how the 4 empires went to war on each other and deals with just EVE Online.
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Portal:EVE_Fiction is the portal where you can find most fiction, all set in the New Eden cluster.
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/514_%28Chronicle%29 for example deals with a clone soldier. which is also featured on the Dust514 site with some others: http://dust514.com/media/fiction/

First batch of the immortal soldiers were likely picked from retired soldiers, soldiers too badly injured to continue duty, and special forces or just unlucky people to survive some selection/elimination process.
Second batch is probably by any means of acceptable physiological requirements and some training, most likely volunteers its not like capsuleers that are first born with the acceptable trait then trained for years on thought controlling before hopping over to the new body, even then those people are mostly volunteers not everyone wants to be a capsuleer.

The tech is an implant that was found in Sleeper ruins (look up Sleepers if you need to) and first used by the Amarr as a means to decisively end their war. Turns out that there are problems with these implants in that they contain fragments of the Sleeper conscious and it drove the soldiers insane. In this fiction here (found on the website), the Amarrian empress Jamyl Surum warns the other leaders of New Eden about this and offers them an alternative technology engineered without the Sleeper conscious. They then recruit soldiers for their militia like how most nations do and give them their implants.
Of course, with this great power not all remain loyal. Most broke away and formed their own corporations, and these corporations are viewed upon differently depending on who you ask. Some find them a threat to all of New Eden, where as others find them a benefit since they still fight their wars. |

As for how mundane "mortal" people view mercs:
Imagine how you would feel in real life to be around someone who could, at any moment, decide they felt like killing everybody around them just because they can, knowing that any consequences, even death, for doing something so pointlessly horrible are temporary inconveniences to them.
It might not be true, maybe this strange person who has done things you can barely imagine still has a conscience. But deep down you are horribly disturbed by the fact that they have all this power and you don't know what goes on inside their head. It's a very natural thing to fear the unknown, and people with more power than you.
They've died and come back. Probably more times than you can count. This person is a killing machine with the power to come back to life, and you've heard some really, really horrible stories about people with that kind of power.
From a great distance, they sound interesting. You just hope they stay at a great distance. |
