I see a lot of curious railgun installation behaviour these days.
Sometimes they'll automatically fire at friendlies, sometimes they can fire without any heat build up (only when unmanned). I also have had the horrible experience of trying to use a railgun installation and finding out that no matter where I aim the turret, the shot I fire will only travel to the target it was aiming at when I first took control. This is especially annoying when I am trying to use the turret to fight a tank.
And finally: last night I saw a railgun installation actually trying to shoot itself. It was aiming at it's own base, with no enemies in the vicinity, firing away. |

That is a functionality that was added for 1.2.
I have yet to see one shoot itself but I will look for it. Should be funny.
There were consistent problems in 1.0 that Rail Guns just wouldn't work in Turrets or HAVs. In patch 1.1 they worked okay, except for the draw distance making it difficult to find targets from within a Tank. 1.2 now have Rail Gun Turrets that randomly shoot, very quickly I might add, while apparently aiming at nothing (my observation).
If the barrel itself has small lightning effects on the barrel then the odds are high it will not work correctly in all scenarios. My experience is that is will briefly but will stop at some point.
I will check to see if the only valid target path is where it was pointed last. That is not how I recall it working but it wasn't something I was looking for either.
I would love to have a turret change direction as fast as the broken ones do. Even the standard ones are amazingly fast over how it works with an operator.

I can back this up with +1,
Lately i've been seeing railguns with nobody manning them just firing every cooldown cycle.. The barrel pans from side to side, and it will just keep firing at nothing. I even see the projectiles leaving the barrel, and explosions at the impact site! |

Just saw one of these take out a friendly dropship, pilot was complaining that it was knocking his ship off balance one second and the next his nose was pointed straight down (presumably it hit a spot very susceptible to flipping). He didn't take direct damage form the railgun but he lost 700k in the ensuing crash. |

I too have seen that the railgun AI has contracted what I call "blueberry turret syndrome." |
