I feel the way of thinking of DS is wrong, instead we should think of them by their air class.
Really a dropship is just a MAV/SCV of the air, expanding the roles it can perform I don't feel is a bad option especially with how much SP already has to be invested with them.
I would say when looking to the future we should think of them more like drop suits or a MAV/SCV. And the Drop ship version of a air vech should be the Logi suit of the air. able to do a little bit of everything but needs protection while it provides support.
I don't feel adding options to it now is taking away from options in the future nor future veh classes.
DS need re-balancing VS ground infantry AV that's for sure.
But keep in mind that could also be just because a FG is a hard counter to the fact that we ONLY have dropships and no other air vech.
Hitting a fast moving small air vech with a forge gun would be quite difficult as are super fast LAV's that can take a hit. especially if said small air veh can tank a FG round shoot some missiles fly out rep and fly back in.
DS are slow and big so its a easy FG target, Other air veh will probably be way smaller single seaters that might make a heavys life hell when it drops down on him in a dive bomb and is fast agile and hard to track.
Also is anyone around who is a max proto dropship pilot? I would not mind doing some play testing with you on the weekend. If you lose your drop ship ill reimburse you your ISK as I would like to do some playtesting with them with you trying various builds vs forge gun. Could be a good learning experience for both of us. |

Dont know, looking at LAV's and tanks their base EHP is pretty low until you add plates and shields on them.
And the Dropship is like I said not built for constant combat but as a air SCV/ Logi air unit.
And im not saying it does not need work in that regard. |

Sort of get you on the first point, but at least the Limbus (LAV) has similar HP base to an Incubus with a 60mm plate. A HAV can afford to put a plate on easier because he's not as drastically gimped if he doesn't have an afterburner. |

I could see that dropships could use a bit of a PG buff. I def think some sort of afterburner should be standard for it, or give it a higher std torque so it can maneuver at low speeds better. at high speeds its weight should prevent it from preforming fighter jet turns, but at low speeds it should me much more agile side to side and up and down.
Make it more helicopter like instead of flying brick, easier to strafe and dip and dodge at low speeds. but no fighter jet in forward flight. |

Problem is that LAVs survive not just because they are manueverable, but because they can get to cover quickly. Their only domain is the ground, and walls make good cover.
Drop ships have no such luxury, and I bet you nine times out of ten you're getting shot at all the way back to safety. |

I don't understand why CCP says no more respec to these pilots yet if the pilots do wait for these new air vehicles you are basically telling them not to play the game. Obviously they'll want to play the game NOW and the closest thing to that are the dropships. |

Actually, logistic dropship are already quite the handy swissknife. CRUs, repping modules, turrets, transport. They can do a lot of things all usefull on the battlefield. Sole problem is the fact that they are especially weak compared to infantry AV. To be honest, Dropships should have been the vehicle to get the resistance and the HP buff LLAV got. |

This is true, however unlike it's drop suit cousin it can't do a lot of this at once. |

I fly both prototype Eryx logistics ships as well as prototype Python Assaults, with a variant of an XT-Accelerated missle launcher or the prototype Blaster turret if i choose to feel like playing with that one. Feel free to add me, I'm a very experienced and skilled pilot and pretty much know all of the ins and outs in flying. I also completely agree with the CPM above, a logi proto fitted with max ward shield extenders is so slow it's not even funny, and the reasonable thing then would be to take out 1 ward shield extender and replace it with say, a fuel injector. But the PG and CPU is so low it's impossible (Keep in mind my logi level is 5 and my shield extender level is also 5) so there still isn't even enough room for a real, worthy fit in the logi to survive any heavy blows. |
