Ok so I decided to pick up a mass driver last night and I find it particularly refreshing as a weapon. If you are a mass driver kingpin or master ninja I'd love to hear your thoughts:
I have two lines of enquiry.
1) the mass driver itself: Having only used the "standard" mass driver, is the difference in blast radius on the breach mass driver a real game-changer or do you go to the other extreme and take the assault variant with the lower damage but big blast radius.
2) the dropsuit: I see a lot of mass driver users in logi suits - is this because of the extra nanohives they can carry or is there some particular advantage a logi suit will provide a mass driver user compared to just running an assault suit. If you care to share what you fit in your highs/lows that would be great.
I'm not part of a corp yet and just solo it in pub matches most of the time if that has any bearing on the advice you can bestow on me. Thanks! :) |

The jump in damage from standard to advanced, to proto is substantial in comparison to other weapons. Highly recommend getting at least the advanced for your fits. (EXO-5)
I am spec'd much more into tanks, but I do run a MD fit for when I go on the ground. It's great for grinding and you use a minimal amount of isk
Militia Amarr Medium Dropsuit (2x H, 1x L)
2x Militia Shield Extender in the high slots (same HP as basic) 1x Basic Armor Plating in the low slot (miltia gives less HP) 1x EXO-5 MD in the weapon high slot 1x Militia Scrambler Pistol in sidearm slot 1x Flux Grenade (essential for a MD user - this is how you take down dual and shield tankers) 1x Militia Nanohive
Total HP: 490 Cost: 16.3k isk
I don't have experience with logi suits. I can imagine the extra nanohives coming in handy, since I'd be able to lob grenades and perform crowd control for quite a long period. |

As per above, always carry flux grenades.
And as for logistics dropsuits, as a logibro I prefer to use an MD over other weapons because my gun game isn't so great. Pinpoint accuracy is challenging for me.
Whilst it does require skill to use the MD, it's a different kind of skill to ARs. Instead of being able to track an enemy, nail some headshots, manage ammo, the MD allows me to unload a clip, scatter the enemy (I've once managed to direct enemies towards a certain spot by firing MD shells into the ground opposite that spot, forcing them to turn), and generally cause havoc (and still get kills). This chaos has more than once allowed me to dive into the middle of a fight as the enemies are hiding to pick up someone and get them back to safety before the enemy dare to show their faces again.
And nanohives are extremely important too. Also explosive damage denies any victims of my MD from being revived; I feel it's important to stuff up enemy logibros like that.
And as for the breach, currently that really only suits a very restricted playstyle. If you want to go for the glory of solely using breach MDs, you'll get it after a few months figuring out how to grab direct hits with it. Before that, you'll be bashing your head against walls.
The opposite is true for the Assault MD. You'll get more assists, you'll go unnoticed on the kill feed, but I suppose its suppressive aspect is powerful and you'll easily get kills if you land flux hits.

I miss that old assault MD. The damage of today's regular MD but with twice the explosion radius. Good times.

are you kidding? the assault has like 6m radius, and i find the 4.4m from freedom almost a bit too much
use a normal MD, not the breach or assault, if you are going for kills. the assault is mainly for supporting your squad and racking up assists. it's main flaw is that in CQC the 6m radius is way too big.
the MDs main danger is the experience of the user vs experience of his target. if you use MD enough it becomes second nature whether to pursue your target or let him go, depending on things like your immediate terrain, after a while you make these decisions almost without much thought.
many times you lure your target into your preferred zone, often my kills come from my target pursuing me but it's a controlled chase on my part, I am setting him up for the kill tho he thinks I'm trying to run from him, I turn the right corner and i am now waiting for him to come around the corner and the splash gets him before he turns it.,
but if your target is a vet he won't be lured easily, and will know how to use the terrain to counter your MD and will try to maintain elevation, which in that case the MD should be backing off by then. the MD suffers vs experienced and geared enemy.
also you will learn to judge by your second shot if your enemy will be able to tank all 6 rounds. if it's not working out for me then I keep a LLAV nearby that i just jumped out of. i never get the medal of honor pinned on me from my team but i do get occasional hate mail which is much more rewarding |

You see the mass driver on logistics suits because it's mainly a support weapon used by support players.
As for the breach yes the splash is a game changer(smaller radius isn't as big a deal, but the splash damage is).
I put shields in my highs, armor and endurance modules in lows playing as a support logi.
If you run as an assault you will likely want one complex damage mod(an extra 25 damage per shot) and shields in your highs, you will want an armor repairer in one of your lows(logi suits self heal). I would choose an SMG or scrambler pistol for the sidearm(but as a logi I get no sidearm).
The difference in damage between tiers isn't actually that much(an extra 12 direct DPS per level, and an extra 5.8 splash DPS per level).
You need to carry flux grenades(standard will strip any infantry of shields). A mass driver without flux grenades is nearly always out gunned.
Get at least advanced nanohives(K-2 nanohives are nice) as you will need them for both your mass driver and your flux grenades(plus if someone happens by they will use them as well for a few points). |

Stick with the standard line of MDs unless you have reason to change. The breach is very hard to use.
Part of the reason you see a lot of logis with the MD is because you will need nanohives to use the MD effectively, you'll also need fluxes. And, as a good Dust citizen, you already have your 1 equipment slot on the assault used up with a needle, right?
Logi vs Assault means that you can do more in the logi because you have more slots. You are slower though, and generally easier to kill.

I use the MD a lot, its a fantastic terror weapon! Before I go into specifics on how I use what MDs and with which suits I want to tell you the MD is a CPU/PG hog. Here is the COMBINED CPU+PG usage of all weapons.
1Swarm Launcher-136 2Heavy Machine Gun-122 3Mass Driver-118 4Plasma Cannon-117 5Forge Gun-117 6Sniper Rifle-107 7Shotgun-107 8Assault Rifle-103 9Laser Rifle-102 10Scrambler Rifle-98 11Submachine Guns-67 12Scrambler Pistol-56 13Nova Knives-56 14Flaylock Pistol-47
That being said I have many suits set up to use MDs depending on what I am doing. I mostly play a Gallente Logistics suit and use the EC-3 Assault Mass Driver, I like the extra rounds in the clip and splash radius. One of the more entertaining suits is my Dragonfly scout with the prototype MD and flux grenades. I always run flux grenades if I can, even the basic ones are a huge boost to the MDs effectiveness.
REMEMBER to always cook your grenades off so when they land there is almost no time for people to run before they explode.
Hope this helps you! |

Alot of logis use the mass driver because it is a great support weapon whereas the Ar is a direct combat weapon so when you face off with an assault your more likely to lose using an Ar as they are quicker with more hit points, id like to note that you need to completely change the way you use the mass driver in planetary conquest due to friendly fire.
My proto amarr logi loadouts are for cqc mass driver, GN specialist nooblock pistol, fused grenades and for medium to long range combat I swap the mass driver for an assault scrambler.
Mass driver is brilliant I live it and you know your boss when you get headshots with it at medium range but I'm not sure if you get a damage bonus, I use the exo5 mass driver :-) |

Words of Wisdom for Breach Mass Driver:
The breach is a completely different animal and it's an oxymoron which is why people who pick it up quickly throw it down. Mass Drivers are Area of Effect weapons, which is what entices some people to use it. However, the Breach is just like any other mass driver except that it has little area of effect, which is what drives away most people. However the breach is more powerful and built for a completely different scenario then the standard and assault.
If you are going to use a breach MD, I'd recommend using a light frame for the same reasons shotgunners use them. The breach is pretty much a shotgun so play it like one. I've used it with great success on defending choke points, such as bridges, doorways, staircases, and especially for using against vehicles.
Don't shun the breach because it's so different from the other variants but don't try and use it like the Standard or Assault because it is not like them and you won't go far. |

One of the things I enjoy about the mass driver are the people who think they can get in a fair strafe fight with it at range. Against a good mass driver user, if you are going to strafe, don't do it in the normal 1-2 meter pattern. Your strafe should either be much wider, or you should work on cunfusingly closing distance with the user. However, if you get in grenade range you run the risk of being fluxed.
I enjoy catching people in thinking they can strafe the mass driver though. That's just not how you fight them. |

The question was asked why so many logis are using the mass driver. The fitting is part of the reason. They have a little more fitting to spare. Also though, it is a good kind of 'second line' weapon. If you are 15m away in repair tool range while you squad members are forward you can easily support from the rear. |

Well yes and no. If you are a pure logi with enfassis on equipment and team play you will soon find out how dificult it is to fit with all the good equipment you need. I have gallente logi level 5 and all my cpu/powergrid on level 3 (core upgrades at level 4) and my fits usually use one mass driver lower than their tier. For example I run advanced mass driver on my proto suit but have a full rack of proto equipment. |

I also run Gallente logi with a MD, though other suits have an easier time fitting the combat gear Gallente shines with the proto equipment. Even running an advanced MD is enough on Gallente support logi, support and fear are your jobs and the MD fits your roll perfectly.
I think the main reason Logis use it is for a terror weapon. No one likes hearing the bark of a Mass Driver and even fewer people like seeing the splash of the explosion next to them. These two things make the MD the perfect terror weapon for a logi!
If I can get an enemy to run for 5-10 seconds, I can either heal my target enough so they don't die, or revive a fallen clone. The only other light weapon that gets close to the "Quick RUN!" factor is the plasma cannon, but the PC is more of a "ROFL, oh your reloading... DIE!" weapon.
