noticed a few things:
>Improved controls and mechanics The gunplay looked an awful lot like Red Dead Redemption, and that's a good thing. Driving mechanics are closer to Midnight Club - more "arcadey" than realistic - which will make the police chases and racing more manageable. The only air vehicles the demo player was shown in were planes, which means no comparison can be made to GTA IV helicopter flight. However, I will say that I can't wait to get into a F16 dogfight over that gorgeous landscape.
>Skills - maybe RPG elements During the skyscraper kidnapping sequence, you can see a list of skills pop up above the character-switch element (have to be quick with the Pause button). Clearly, each character is better at certain activities than the other two. One thing I couldn't help but notice was that it seemed like none of the skill bars were full. Normally, you don't make a bar you don't intend to fill completely at some point. This leaves two options: Either the characters get better based on the story progression, or you can level them up by running side missions (like the shooting minigame). I suspect it would level up, but not down - like an RPG - so that players don't feel obligated to go back to the bike races to keep their Stamina up.
>Fully fleshed-out side activities Pause during the golf scene. That HUD seems to gives at least as much information as a retail golf game, as do the controls. Going further, it seems like this attention to detail is added to most other sports and activities shown.
>Customization Shown customization affected clothing, tattoos, and vehicles. All options seemed at least as deep as any other video game that has those options. Hinted at was property, with a waterfront apartment available - will we get to buy a boat dock or helipad for the ritzier abodes? I hope for two things: Customization of boats/aircraft (was that winch added on?), and the idea of multiplayer being anywhere close to having as many options for customizing.
>Multiplayer First off, the little teaser looked chaotic and massive - add the rumored 32 playercount with the full range of vehicles, and things will get insane. I can only imagine the possibilities of emergent gameplay in the Free Mode (there's no way the action in the video was a structured match), let alone any bright ideas Rockstar will come up with. Randomized heist mode please? Another thing to note is that the player appeared to spawn in an apartment - will we get assigned home property when we enter a host's match? Can we upgrade our residence with that fat wallet we see in our top-right corner? |
