Which means that OZAROW took the correct approach by fully skilling into a very specific build, and the onus lies with CCP to actually make a balanced game.
If specialization alone was the point of the game, people would be able to respec every week and be fully specialized in whatever role they chose, whenever they choose. This isn't that game. Skillpoint choices are permanent, and choices have consequences. Overspecialization is a basic pitfall of the system, and it is not an unintended one. The onus IS on CCP to make a balanced game, but balance isn't something achieved or completed, its something constantly in motion as new content is added, old content adjusted, and players explore/exploit new tactics. Putting all your eggs in one basket only to be shocked when a few things change is simply foolish.

At one point Scouts were world-beaters because they couldn't be shot, then Tanks, then swarm launchers, then laser rifles, then Tactical Assault Rifles, and now everyone is demanding respecs so they can put their skill points into the newest trump card of Caldari Logi.
Yes, and this is because people are specializing in those FotM builds (and occasionally OVERspecializing). Skillpoint respecs are a major aggravating factor to the use of dominant FotM tactics. In fact this is probably the number one reason respecs are in general not given out lightly, and why CCP might never offer Aurum respecs (that and because they're pay-to-win and cheapen your character a bit).
As someone who has played Eve for a long time, let me tell you that in some sense it will always be this way. The metagame will always dictate some FotM strategy. CCP does listen to people's complaints/demands about balancing, but they have a policy of not commenting in specific terms unless a fix is already in the works. By all means ***** and moan about how terrible life is as a scout, or how OP this or that is. Just for the love of God don't ***** about how you wasted 2m sp on some rank8 skill with marginal benefits for a single weapon instead of unlocking an entire new specialization or role. Its the worst argument you can make.

And how exactly did that turn out for him? Oh wait, he made a thread to tell us all about his poor choices. This should be taken as a cautionary tale for other players, not a tale of man cruelly wronged by CCP.
Quote:The huge elephant in the room, and the one that will prevent CCP from growing the DUST population is the fact that it takes 6 months to really get anywhere near completing a specific build, but if there is no stable foundation of balance, then why would anyone spend the time skilling into anything? Once you complete the build you were working on for 6 months it may go from being a viable option to being completely and utterly useless.
Gosh, what a bunch of sensible observations, I wonder what lessons we might draw from this? Perhaps it would be useful to recognize that we're roughly on the 80//20 rule here. Or that if your "complete" build contains a lot of lvl 5's and no lvl 4 skills, then you're probably on a foolish plan. Or maybe we should accept that not all skills were created equal, and choosing the correct one requires a bit of general knowledge, awareness of one's own needs, and a bit of critical thinking too!
BTW, that elephant isn't going anywhere. Its working as intended. And again, the game will not one day achieve a sense of balance. It will always be in flux. |
