Aiming:
-The iron sights are obstructive. -The 'zoom' reduces your peripheral vision. -The only way i can tell if I am on target is if the UI shows up with their suit type and shield/armour and I see their shields go down. -I can only tell if i am hitting if their health is going down. -Theres one particular surface texture and mood lighting which makes the ground really shiney. Shooting from an elevated position down on it I can't see targets. -Hip fire is unusable due to the ranges it needs to operate at.
Aiming isn't the only problem to using the laser effectively. As the only dedicated laser user in my corp, I get asked if the laser is worth using. It is, but with very heavy caveats:
- You need to dedicate your play style to use it effectively. This includes positioning yourself in effective areas with wide and long fields of view. - You need to learn what range is with no visual clue other than the UI showing dropsuit stats when on target. You need to know 66-74 or 85, the optimal and effective ranges (at least of the standard laser in the ranges thread.) Its something you need to get an innate sense of. I've had to learn the new ranges and have gone from 79 longest kill to 84. - You need to be able to put the laser on target and be able to keep it on target as they move. With the obstruction I have noted above with the beam and iron site, this is not straightforward. - To operate the laser effectively you need to switch to a sidearm and be comfortable using it. Switch if within 40m or someone gets the jump on you. My preference is the SMG. - You need to have a sense of timing with the ammo as you keep your continuous fire. You don't have time to watch the ammo count and keep the laser on target. With the reduced damage compared to Chromosome you need to get the laser heated to the point of overheat, without going over. With Viziam Laser 33 is the overheat point on all suits, the Amarr Assault Proto is 11. 33 is not enough to kill heavily tanked suits or most proto. I cant give the figures for other lasers or Amarr suits as I dont use them. Learn how long you can keep this fire going and stop before 11. I've got the knack of stopping at 12 or 13. Getting to 12 allows you to 'swipe' 2 people as long as they are both close. - I've yet to suicide outside the initial Uprising learning curve but the overheat causes problems outside just damage to yourself and inability to run or switch to sidearm. Even when you have weapons free you still need to reload. There's a glitch where quite often you try to reload and your unable so you need to switch to sidearm and then back. The time from overheat to having a fully reloaded weapon can make the difference between having area control and having enemies close or get multiple fire points on you.
Even with all of the above, the laser is my favourite weapon. I can only recommend it if people go Viziam and Proto Amarr Assault and dedicate their play style to it.
And:
Remove the iron sights and go back to the old 'camera' view. It's a laser, the beam is the aim function. Its a laser pointer! The weapon already has enough 'quirks' and the beam equally targets and let's your enemy know where you are.
With this change I'd be fine with the excessive overheat problems and the constraints on range where its usable. I can't comment on lower tier lasers but I'm fine with the damage output of the Viziam. |
