So I've been thinking about something that would make you feel like you're making progress on your way to that proto suit. Right now, you can only put points into a skill if you have all the points required to bring it up to the next level. What I'm proposing is allowing you to put however many skill points into a skill you want, regardless if that would bring you up a level or not.
How it would work
I have 5,000 SP and want to put it into a skill, say, Scrambler Pistol Operation, which is currently at 0. I dump 5,000 SP into the skill. I don't have it at level 1 yet, so I can't use anything beyond militia, but I now have a picture / bar that shows I've made progress to this goal. If I'm already capped out and am gaining 1k SP per match, I can watch this bar move after every game I play.
Why
Free to play games can only thrive if you're interested in the content and feel a drive to progress. What this would do, rather than the current "tiered" system, would show visible progress towards a goal. It is much more satisfying to see a bar slowly fill up than to continuously play game after game with no changes being made other than the pool count.
In the example above, a new player would see visible progress being made towards his goal. This may make them want to stay on to fight another few matches to see that bar go higher. I feel that having a visual representation would give that feeling of "almost there" better than numbers would.
If this were Eve, I wouldn't even have brought this up since everyone that flies internet spaceships is extremely proficient in Excel / OpenOffice, however we're working with FPS players. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying FPS players are stupid. This is an entirely different playerbase that, for the most part, doesn't want to deal with "math", "numbers", or "spreadsheets", but wants to be able to quickly glean what they need to know from simple graphs so they can get back to running and gunning.
TL;DR - Allow skill points to be spent, regardless of whether or not this would bring the skill up to the next level. Introduce a progress bar when allocating skill points to show current progress to the next level.
I would like to note that the proposed changes in no way, shape, or form, involve changing any skill requirements.

No, that would be dumb. Accumulating unallocated points and purchasing skill upgrades with them offers the most freedom and choice. By having them auto assigned and a progress bar, you're not really getting any useful functionality. |

The only difference is that you get to place them into a skill without having to wait until you can outright level it up. This would let you get a feeling of gradual progression instead of the steps we have now. You could always, of course, save unallocated SP and spend it only when you have enough to boost a skill by a level. The proposal only lets you add SP to a skill, regardless if it would up it a level or not.
EDIT: Example - You have 5000 SP. You want Scrambler Pistol Operation 1, which requires about 12k. You dump that 5000 SP into the skill. You get to see a progress bar showing how much SP you have invested / progress to next level. It does not automatically assign SP into this skill afterwards. |

Might as well make it a 100% passive skill in this case. |

What are you talking about this is the same thing but now you don't have to go back and place in to sp something every time you want to. If you gain sp it is automatically goes into the assigned skill unless I am reading this thread wrong? So it saves people time and lets them watch their progression.

I also suggested something similar. My idea was a skill system like TES V: Skyrim has. You level up by doing damage, taking damage, healing etc. This would require a Militia Version of every item but you would actually see your progress. |

This is pretty much the same thing, however, only reason I'd support this thread is if you could have sp auto assigned to that skill and choose whether or not you'd like to keep auto accumulating points in to that skill every time you reached the next level of the skill. The OP in combination with this. I'd like to be able to "mark skill for upgrade" a skill so that all gained SP is directly put into the marked skill. Once the skill is upgraded we should get a "skill training complete" notification just like in eve.
This reduces perceived grinding as players don't feel the urge to constantly check if they got enough sp and can just keep playing instead.

Having auto-allocation would be fine too, as long as it is an option that can be toggled on / off. There are those that would still like to pool points over time, then spend them at once, so I'd like to leave that ability to do so intact. |

I imagine auto-allocation as equal alternatve to normal allocation.
Select skill => select level => X allocates from pool to the selected level, square marks for auto allocation to the selected level.
Usability edit: When auto-allocation is selected, first square press should always stop auto allocation, second should then set auto allocation again. This spares people the search for the skill they want to "un-mark" in order to mark another one. |

Couldn't hurt. It would be somewhat of a placebo effect. As long as it is optional. Could also help people stay focused. There have been a few occasions i have been saving up for that last level in CPU upgrades, then after a few tasty beverages thrown those points into lasers. oops. |

That's basically what I'm shooting for, the placebo effect. Seeing a visual representation of how close you are might get you excited that you're "almost there" and drive you to stay on for a few more matches. |
