I am going to get flamed but oh well.
HMG's, Scramblers and Laser Riffles all over heat leaving the wielder dead in the water anywhere from 3 to 10 seconds while the AR just bunny hops around with impunity as some have put it...So why not give them a jam mechanic instead of like some were saying make them as well overheat...I don't personally think that is the right thing to do but I do feel if you fire an entire 40-90 round mag thru one non stop there should be a penalty of some sort to doing so.
AR users suffer no cost for using it where as a specialty class like the Heavy Machine Gun not only is slower then molasses in January they also have to watch the heat conservation on all their weapons especially the burst HMG's. So I ask why even run an HMG except to be a target for every body running the assault riffle makes no sense to me at all.
Well some will say well we get lower damage then anything out there at I think top AR (Non Tactical) is 37.5 no mods Still eats threw a heavy suit with out problems unless I am in cover or have a logi with me...Alot of the fields getting to the objective there is no cover to be found.
From a real world perspective and yes I have it from my days in the military every weapon will jam given the conditions we are fighting in. Hell even if it something as simple as a stove pipe jam ( shell getting stuck in the ejection port) to the Magazine not seating all the way (which I see more feasible then anything)
I feel that would help balance the game tremendously.

I agree completely there needs to be a downside to every weapon either through a mechanic or just what it is (example:killing yourself wit a mass driver)
Currently the ar is the only weapon that has no downside.

I usually don't comment on these posts because I use an AR most of the time and feel like that makes me "the enemy", but at the same time - that is the weapon that kills me more than any other also. As far as going up against ARs I have as much experience and input as anyone else. When I get killed by MOST ARs I feel like it was a fair kill and the wielder earned it. This excludes TARs and Duvolles - some of those seem a bit ridiculous, but this is already being investigated. Outside of that I am just as effective with a scrambler rifle or even an SMG. In fact, I use my cheap SMG for close quarters instead of my AR because it is more effective and more powerful at CQC. I don't see the typical AR as being OP. What other than its common usage (which is expected of a general purpose weapon) means that it needs to be nerfed or handicapped? |

Jack of all trades, master of them too indeed Range.
When the New Racial ARs come, which they hopefully come in these Rapid Fire Updates, or at Least one of them, the GAR can be given Crippling Low Range.
In fact, give it the HMG range as of Current, and Buff the HMGs range a bit, 5-10m
Let the ScR Fill the Optimal that the AR has now, and the CR 10-15 Meters less then the New ScR Range/Old GAR Range
Then Give the RR the same Optimal that the TGAR has now, and then Transfer the other stats of the Breach AR
Da.

I don't consider the AR users enemies I am simply looking towards a balance issue... Your right the Duvolles are stupidly OP in my opinion but I am biased as I can't stand the Duvolle... |

I'll always expect more people to run AR, it's a good all around weapon, and without a lot of SP, it's a safe investment. I run AR in uprising, even though I ran MD in chromosome for that reason. That said I think the other weapons need to be brought up, the AR is fine and though jamming conceptually is nice, it doesn't balance something that can be tracked and prepared for like overheat. So an AR overheat mechanic and jam would be cool, but I think the only limitation in my mind is just the futuristic setting. |

You would need to implement a reload technique like Gears of War has imho.
Other possible fix would be making clip smaller to force more reloads.
Not proposing these just saying. |

At least with overheat mechanics an experienced user can avoid them. Introducing a random jam chance to the AR is just flatly not fun and not interesting. This is a terrible idea. The quick killing by an AR (particularly at range) happens when the user can line up a bead on a stationary and unaware target, causing every round to connect and the target to die before it can react. In this case the entire clip isn't even going to be used, so a jam mechanic wouldn't do much for this except to make the AR totally useless in CQC or make the weapon un-fun in general. And yes, I do think you should be able to switch weapons or at least run away after overheating one of the other weapons. |

They need something, but jamming won't work. Plasma weapons can't jam- ones that use solid projectiles (minmatar weapons) can. |

Good idea. It would be excellent to have at least one downside to this weapon. Someone mentioned fewer rounds in the magazine. I think that is the best option.

I Think it should be given an overheat mechanic, because the jam mechanic will make the AR hard to use because of it randomly stopping in battle rather than an overheat gauge that can be seen to prevent the overheat.
edit: when I use my militia AR suit the AR glows red, so why no overheat? |

ARs should spontaneously explode in your hand with the damage of a grenade. Also, every 3rd bullet should come out of the back of the gun and shoot the user in the face.
Come on man, maybe, MAYBE.. lower the damge. But jamming?
You want us to take unreliable guns onto the battlefield? That would be the death kiss of the AR. |

maybe you have to reactivate it via voice activation by holding it in the air and screaming "this is my boomstick, activate!" once its overheated beyond manufacturer recommendations. |

LOL, or every time it jams you have to punch in the Konami Code to get it to unlock |
