I have always told new or frustrated players that the most Over Powered thing in dust Is not the flaylock/viziams/TARS/HMG's/Sargaris but Teamwork.
Squads, teamwork, balanced roles, voice communication are incredibly powerful, And one thing a new player doesn't have is friends to make a squad with. Everybody can agree if your playing solo your going to suck! get a corp, get a squad ASAP.
Organized squads of good players absolutely dominate matches, to be honest its quite boring being on the same team. a quick redline, then run around in circles waiting for some brave new player to blinding rush out to there death.
= ==| PART 1: Some things that are squad specific should be available to the entire team. =
-Tac-Net and radar: Being in a Small squad or NO squad puts you at a huge disadvantage, Often have I seen kills on the feed but not a single red dot or chevron or LAV/HAV icon anywhere. In fact more often then not you will have no tac-net info at all. Im not sure why it works this way to begin with. But it would be huge in leveling the playing field between squads/no-squads. It seems to work in the academy because nobody is in a squad. But once your out, and facing the wolves with our super tactics and weaponry, we are also going to strip you of the intel gathererd by your teamates.
NEW PLAYER : "OH I can see a bunch of blue dots shooting at red dots, I should go that way and help them"
-Squad orders: They work exactly the same, except visible to the entire team. I can see squad 0 has an attack order on B. I will take my squad to A, and the random un squaded new player can see a defense Order up on Mr uber elite proto boss. Now he knows where he should be going, and there is an organized group there to watch his back. Have people also been asking for better communication between squads, like team leaders that can cross chat. a silent Squad order would help.
NEW PLAYER: "Defend that guy, OK he looks pretty tough, and im getting extra WP for doing it, Cool"
-orbitals: a single shot OB that can be earned by 1 player would be fun, but not as important. It does suck telling a new person they have to be a Squad leader and get 2500wp combined, and only the squad lead gets to push the button. meh
-Drop links: It seems as if everybody on the team can now spawn on these, a step in the right direction.
The only advantage a squad should have over the rest of the field is isolated Voice coms. which is still OP.
= ==| PART 2: The act of squading. =
Our Corp is just my bro and I, and a few other RL friends that are collecting dust waiting for the game to get good enough to leave there current FPS of choice. But our alliance chat is absolutely spammed with " LFS" "RF2" "x" 24/7. Lots of great peeps in there, that just want to squad up and bring some pain.
-Show squads in all channels: Look at the team channel, it shows the squads and who is not in a squad. Take that same layout and add it to Corp/Alliance/Chat. Let them see who is squaded up and let them just join right in. exactly how it is in the team channel in the Warbarge. It would need a bit more info, such as | Open | locked | in battle | but that's it.
Now that new player in the great and powerful "Storm Wind Strikeforce" hits select for the first time and sees his corp and all the available squads inside it. He can join up, Chat with his new bro's and get into a fight. He doesnt have to get pounded until he finds a good corp, applies, gets accepted, type some lame promo with his DS3, just to ask if there is a squad he can join. Its cumbersome, and the functionality already exists inside the Warbarge.
I believe this would not only help new players, but everybody as well. We all know this game can be extremely confusing for new players, and anything that can be done to "guide" them to there next objective is a good thing.

Teamwork is definitely OP, as it should be. But there shouldn't be benefits restricted to squad members without justification for doing so. Uplinks (now fixed) and TACNET are examples of things that should be shared team-wide. Orbitals and increased WP are justified in being squad specific.
I've been playing for two months and I didn't even know/realize the tacnet was squad specific. Is it?
Single shot orbital would be fun, but would be tough to balance. If you put them every 500 WP it would be ridiculous, every 1000 WP would be good (give people a reason to do skirmish). Good that it wouldn't compete with squad orbitals.
as for communications, players should be able to talk to their squad by default, but have a button to broadcast teamwide similar to PTT.
The biggest concern by far is getting pubbies into squads in the first place. If they join the battle directly instead of being in the war barge, then they don't see any notification when they're invited to a squad. Your team is at a big disadvantage when you have 1-2 squads with 2 people and everyone else not in a squad. Basically, I think the blinking notifications icon should be visible during battle if you've gotten a squad invite, or some other message should be visible when you're not in a squad at all. Maybe even a "Hey, you're not in a squad" message if you're not in one, regardless of invites.
Last night I was squadding up with a corp mate and we were getting rolled in this skirmish by a group of six players that always moved together. I'd ninja a null cannon and they would casually roll over, steamroll me and whoever else was there, and team-hack the null cannon to protect it. Then we got an orbital but couldn't find them. I walked around a corner and got annihilated by them, but not before I spotted several of them on my tacnet. My corpie dropped the orbital, killing their whole squad. It was nice. |
