I know it's been requested before, but I want to bump this request for a different reason.
CCP is asking what to do about the New Player Experience (NPE). We see threads regarding the academy and how new players are being spit out and are still unprepared for the real game.
We know that CCP is working on better matchmaking.
One thing that was mentioned in the Academy thread is that the academy should be more like a school, and this got me thinking.
A spectator mode would go a long way towards allowing new players to bridge the gap between the academy and the real game. They would be able to watch matches and observe the faster pace, the better tactics, etc. They could teach themselves without have to have their ass handed to them repeatedly.
Now, I fully support a better matchmaker - which I think is imperative to improving the NPE. I also think PVE is of huge importance to improving the NPE. Academy tweaks are also important, but I think adding a spectator mode to the game would also help a great deal with the NPE.

1) Ghosting. 2) Server load.
Every spectator adds to server load. Each client has to transfer packets and each packet needs to be error checked. Each spectator adds load and this limits the load the server could dedicate to higher player counts, Texture maps, frame rate etc.
So absolutely not. Ever. |

What about prerecorded matches. Is it possible to have something similar to Spectator Mode without running into the issues you listed? If you could have the same capabilities for a prerecorded match that you would have for being a Spectator (like hopping from Merc to Merc) then you could accomplish the goal of training without interfering with the matches. If it starts to lag while "students" are watching it, it wouldn't matter because the match is already over. You could limit the amount of observers watching the (prerecorded) match, simply by queuing up like you would for a real match.
I don't know if this makes sense or is even possible. If I am way off base, then please disregard. |

Yes for spectator mode - but later.
There's so much work to do on performance. Spectator mode would take some resources and optimization should still be focusing on core game. |

The server could save all combat data during the round, then offload this data to another server that refers it to spectators with a certain delay to everything.
Recording this data instead of flushing from RAM it as soon as possible still adds some load to the server but at least it'll help with (but not solve) the whole combat intel issue by putting some extra delay to it and keeps the additional stress somewhat limited. |

Well, I think server load is a relatively non issue given that the observer would be just a camera, and not a full agent, meaning the load should be considerably lighter for an observer than a player. Also, many games have this.
Regarding ghosting. This could be a potential issue, and I don't have an easy solution. Obviously the observers shouldn't be able to chat either via voice or text. Beyond that, I'll have to think about it.
Recorded matches would be nice, and Halo reach does this, but I imagine a recording system would constitute a major programming effort. I'd love to see it, but I think the effort might be high.
