Since I got at least one positive comment on the following idea I figured I'd share it...
Quote:Yeah, have to agree on the new player concerns front.
I don't know what they are thinking... but I find the solutions they put in place are rather ham fisted attempts at fixing things. The battle academy, for example is not a great in-game source of fun. They need to put in a lot more thought so they can find a game suitable solution that enhances the fun without imposing artificial barriers on players.
Just an off the cuff dumb idea and not a suggestion, so I hope I won't get roasted, but having some type of planet to planet transportation system, with costs based on the expected skill level, could allow people to self-segregate. The beginner would not have the coin to get there (to high level planets) and would get owned if they did. Also, due to the risk/reward concept the ISK and drops in those areas would attract higher level folks who wouldn't want to waste time stomping newbs.
To me, this is a lot more fun that slapping people into a battle academy. It has the chance to add to the concept of the game itself while serving a purpose. More fixes should end up with this type of effect instead of breaking something or acting like a clunky barrier that gets in the way of enjoyment.
This goes along with my in-forum suggestions that CCP focus on FUN solutions to issues at hand... not simply solutions. Self-segregation where the process of segregating players becomes a player utilized part of the gameplay is a solution that is much more fun than simply ending up in a different place because you are new.
Similarly, fixing sniper quick-scoping by adding a wandering effect when you scope is certainly one way to solve that issue, but it isn't one that seems likely to be enjoyable. I suppose some folks might like fighting the random repositioning each time they attempt to use the scope but I imagine a dispersion effect that randomizes bullet trajectory while the weaspon is warming up would be less disruptive.
Please, please, please be careful about accepting "any old solution" to the problems in the game. We simply cannot end up with the incredible great game that you envision if we are willing to clobber gameplay every time something is found to need some type of fixing.
Games should be fun... every problem is an opportunity to add a game element that adds to the immersion, the choices, the control, or the appeal. Don't waste them. |

The planet to planet fix I don't like, there are to many planets in the EVE universe and as of the player base right now. WE COULD ALL HAVE OUR OWN PLANET!!!!! All to ourselves.
I would rather see payout changes. You can pick the difficulty of the match up front, "Mission Dangerous" or "Guard Duty" and the only thing that changes is the payout. This will attract Vets and Newbies who just don't care to the high payouts and let people who don't want to compete to stick to low payout matches until they get enough SP.
No need for anything fancy, let the community distribute itself.
<><><><> Also I agree about the wandering scope, thats pretty sad. It would be more interesting if the gun kinda "Locked on". You hit scope mode and the targeting reticle starts kinda wide and then you hear a noise like the computer is computing and the reticle starts zooming in VERY quickly down to a tiny dot as the computer reaches optimal calibration.
As any sniper knows, there are alot of variables that can mess up your shot, from a cold barrel to a knock on your scope itself. This would just be the Dust way of having the CPU start to compensate for all that jazz. |

I don't really propose planet to planet distribution in that sense... just a concept of controlling "where" you are going to do your fighting based on risk and payout -- with a price tag that makes it hard to get there before you should. The concept of "planets" introduces travel and having to pay for that travel in some way. |

A variant...
Crash Monster wrote:I think it would be a lot less complicated to have a "you must be this tall for this ride" qualification system that let's you into higher payout battles.
Integrate it into the game in a good way, such as paying for the privilege to unlock the higher paying choices via travel or merc attainment status, so that people can opt-in to get stomped if they want to and we're good.
Better players won't want to waste their time in low pay/reward zones.
No complex algorithm to figure out how to match people optimally. It's only the new players that need to be protected... it's not like vets won't be happy to mow them down if they decide to show their suits in higher risk/reward matches.
I suppose you could limit the the number of levels "down" that a merc could visit... assuming enough players to support more than two or three levels down the road. |

my personal take on matchmaking
anyone between 0 - 3,000,000 should be matched together bc at this point, most players will be able to run full std suits + mods + equipment + weapons with the occasional dude in militia suit + Gek
anyone between 3,000,000 - 9,000,000 should be matched together bc at this point, most players will be able to run full adv suits + weapons + equipment + modules. At this point, most stats players will be using would be at the lv 3's
anyone between 9,000,000 and above should be matched since this is the proto lv. you can carry proto weapons, mods, suits at this point if speced accordingly.
This way, new players will have a longer chance to hone their skill against equally equipped players (skill is another thing and just takes time) |
